Product Description
Allows a vehicles engine to activate without physical contact from the user. This feature is useful for warming up your vehicles engine and transmission to operational temperatures. In cold climates you can have your interior hot or in warm climates you can cool it down before use. All of this can be done while in the comfort of your home or office. Receive visual confirmations from your vehicles security system or remote start system. Features such as remote start, lock/unlock, arm/disarm and trunk release will appear on the remote’s screen with its current status. An LCD remote can display warning icons when the doors, trunk or hood are open. If your vehicle is tampered with, some remotes display what part of the vehicle was affected. Performs lock and unlock tasks without physical contact with the vehicle. Power door locks can be controlled from several feet away or even within a building using a remote fob. The fob emits a radio frequency that is digitally encoded to prevent frequency stealing so no one can enter into your vehicle without your wireless transmitter. This shock sensor utilizes warning chirps for minor disturbances and will trip the alarm if it detects more serious impacts or disruptions. Most dual zone shock sensors have adjustable sensitivity to reduce false alarms or warnings. These sensors let would-be thieves know that your vehicle is equipped with an advanced alarm system and to keep away. Send commands to your remote start or alarm system and receive confirmation that those commands were carried out. Obtain updates on your vehicles security status and get driver pages on the remote. If your vehicle is being tampered with, your remote transmitter will warn you and set off the vehicles alarm.

I don't know how reviewers on here are installing these things in 3 hours or less... If they are, they are not spending any time on a clean install, and they must not be utilizing all of the features this system offers.
I installed this in my 1991 Subaru Legacy and it took me all of 24 hrs. Eight hrs a day, every day, over my three-day-weekend. I took the time to install power door locks in my car which added a significant amount of time to the project, because I had to completely remove and disassemble my driver's door. This was necessary to run new wires to the door lock actuator and to the relays that were triggered by the Avital system. I also installed this car in a manual transmission vehicle, though it specifically states in the install pdf on DEI's website not to. In order for this system to be used safely in a manual transmission vehicle, it MUST tap into the neutral switch on the transmission or ECU. You can use the hood pin ground wire for this function. My car is set up this way and it will not start the car while it is in any gear or when the parking brake isn't engaged. You can use the neutral switch wire on the module to connect to the parking brake. If the neutral switch wire is grounded, the remote start will function. If not, the remote start will be inhibited. You should install the included toggle switch inline with the neutral switch wire so you can disable the remote start at any time. You will also need to install a relay that bypasses the clutch pedal switch ONLY when the remote start is functioning. This can be very dangerous so make sure you do it right. You can trigger this relay using the 200ma ground (status) on the heavy gauge relay pack. If done correctly, the clutch must be pressed in order to start the car with the key. When starting with the remote, the car should only start while in neutral, with the parking brake on.
With that said, this is a VERY nice system. Very high quality wiring and I have complete faith in all of the included attachments. I LOVE all of the little "creature comfort" features that the system offers: Domelight supervision (VERY handy), Active/Passive alarm arming (locks car and arms alarm after 30 sec - 1 min), remote start parking timer, adjustable remote start run time, 24 hour daily remote start setting, Valet mode, Silent arming/disarming, etc. I love the little two way remote and am so glad that I got this kit over the 5103 1-way security/remote start. If I leave the car in gear, the remote reads "inhibited" and won't start the car. Very handy. Keep in mind that the 5303 module only has one on-board relay (for the parking lights). Nearly every feature that turns on lights/locks doors/bypasses a switch requires a SPDT or SPST relay. For my car I used 4 SPDT relays: 1 to run unlock circuit, 1 to run lock circuit, 1 to bypass clutch switch, and 1 for the domelight supervision.
Let me just say that I LOVE domelight supervision. It turns on my dome light everytime I disarm the alarm for 60 seconds, so my car is lit before I even get in. Pressing the brake pedal will turn off the domelight if you are ready to drive. It also turns my dome light on every time I turn my car off at the end of a trip so my interior is lit before I even open my door. And when the alarm goes off, it flashes the dome light in alternating unison with the parking lights.
Another neat feature that stands out is the temperature controlled remote start. By pressing a combo of buttons on the 2-way remote, you can see the interior temperature of your vehicle before you even start it. And you can set up the remote start to start the car whenever the interior temperature drops below a certain point. Neat!
I love how the alarm has so many triggers, without a ridiculous amount of wiring to accomplish them. I can set off my alarm by slapping a window, bumping the car, slamming the door after it is armed, putting the car in gear, pressing the brake pedal, opening any door, turning a key in the ignition, turning on the dome light, etc. All of these can be triggered when the car is off and the alarm is armed. I also love the starter interrupt in the Xtreme Capacity Relay Satellite, that stops anyone from starting the car if the system is armed. No transponders/bypasses involved. If the alarm is armed, the car won't start. Period.
Now my complaints (very minor and few):
The 2-way remote has tons of functions that can only be adjusted or enacted by the use of many different combinations of the 5 buttons on the remote. Can be kind of a pain to learn the different combos.
The range on the 2-way remote is a bit less than the 1-way remote that comes also.
The door lock pulse can not be reduced to less than 0.4 seconds. (a 0.1 second pulse would be ideal for my actuators).
The siren is not very loud when installed in the engine bay, it is best to hook to the horn as well (the system offers wiring for it).
If you press the lock, unlock, and start button at the same time (to reveal interior temperature) and you don't press them perfectly simultaneously, you can sometimes unintentionally start your car. Not a huge deal, though. Just shut it off and try to be more coordinated.
But other than that, I LOVE IT. And for about $100 shipped, you can't go wrong!
Just remember to buy some relays on Amazon Prime at the same time. I happened to get a 5 pack of AGT SPDT 30/40 Amp relays with harnesses for $13 shipped with Prime. I recommend them! Price can't be beaten with a stick.
On to my review! Let me start explaing why I give this system three stars. For those who may not know, Avital of part of the 'Directed Electronics' (DE) family. You are basically buying a Viper, Paython, Clifford, Avital, etc system and depending on the badging you will pay a fair price or flat out be ripped off. These systems are meant to be sold through (and installed) by authorized dealers. Directed Electronics does not make nor market these systems towards to DYI'er unlike say, Bulldog, who even includes an installation DVD. DO NOT expect any help or assistance from DE. They flat out don't care about you unless you are a dealer. DO NOT expect this system to include installation instructions of any kind other than a wire layout sheet. You will have to turn to the internet for help if you've never done one of these before. Support if you're not an installer is non existent so I took stars off for that.
Another reason for the three stars is because this 5303L system is a dinosaur. It's been around AT LEAST ten years already, the only thing "new-ish" is the FOB. DE does very little to update and upgrade their systems. In fact, DE may not be around in another 7-10yrs. The main reason I decided to get this Avital 5303L was because it was a relatively cheap two way system from a main stream company. Also, because it's been out so long If my brain module goes bad I can most likely find one out there but I am living with some regret anyway which I'll explian towards then end below.
I've installed remote start systems on two other cars (personal) in the past so I didn't need much hand holding. There isn't much to say about the brain module and wires included in the kit, it seems like the standard quality you'd expect. The main gripe is with the "Horn/Aux 3" wiring as the harness only has about a 4" lead for the horn output. You'll definitely need to add wiring to it. I won't comment on the alarm end of things because I didn't install it. I hate alarms and they tend to cause headaches from my own past experience.
The two way FOB was also a deciding factor as to why I chose the Avital 5303L over other DE systems. Lets be realistic, the FOB is what makes the system. It's what you hold and use eveytime you get into/out of your vehicle. While it has some outdated elements (those that have been around cars a lot will know what I mean), it's still a nice looking FOB. The fact that the FOB utilizes a 'AAA' battery is great news to me. Love the idea of just popping a new battery rather than having a rechargeable FOB like some other companies do. This is purely personal preference here people.
Range: I live in NYC. Lots of obstructions to degrade signals in general. Given where I live, I'm satisfied with the range of this system BUT it is nowhere near the range I'd expect from a system costing this much. Years ago I installed a "Ultra Start" one way system in my then Toyota Camry and the range was about the same as this one. Difference is, I paid $45 for the Ultra Start at the time. The max distance I have GPS "confirmed" is 584 feet and I've included a screen shot of it, note that I did have a line of sight of the car. Also, it's important to mention that you'll have better chances of remotely starting your car at longer distances if the antenna on the windshield is either facing you or if you can see the driver/passenger side windows as opposed to the back of the car which can block the signal.
I've installed this Avital 5303L in my manual shift car even though it's meant for automatics only. I wired mine so that if I leave my car in gear, the remote start will not function. If you plan on installing this system onto a manual transmission vehicle, make sure you do as I did to prevent any accidents. I can't walk you through that part unfortunately.
A local installer wanted $350 parts, labor then tax on top to install this system into my car. I wired up my rear defroster as well as my headlights to so I can turn them on and off via the FOB, this would have cost me extra if I had gone with an installer a relay's were needed.
I value the two-way remote feature but if I didn't, I may have gone with the Avital 4103LX instead and saved a bunch of money. I mentioned above that I do have regret and that is that I wish I had gone for an Excalibur (Omega) system simply because it's just way more feature packed and the FOB looks much more modern.
In closing: I've seen this system priced as low as $100 here on Amazon, I paid $116. The price is what this two-way alarm system has going for it. I would by this in a heart beat over the similarly priced e b a y special any day. Truthfully, I would still recommend this system to anyone that doesn't have huge range requirements simply due to the price. If you do have big range requirements, go look at the Compustar T11, tie your jaw up because it will drop off your face once you see that beast.
