At times, each chapter felt like a vignette into Suzy's life and I wondered how they might tie together, but by halfway through I could not put this book down! As Suzy grows to a teenager, the precarious nature of her upbringing--absent, unreliable father; harried, sometimes weak-willed mother with a succession of unsuitable boyfriends--plays out in destructive behaviours that could see Suzy's ruin, but this is a story about hope and making choices as much as about coming of age. Above all, it is about having the power and the right to choose to lead the life you know you deserve. I couldn't help but notice the difference between Suzy and her mother, and the underlying feminist theme. The most powerful message is one of knowing when to say "no" and when you are better off alone than with a man who does not respect you. In the novel, that respect comes from a surprising and heart-warming source who would fit right in as a cast member of SE Hinton's The Outsiders.
I found Awakenings a thoroughly enjoyable, compelling and powerful novel that stays with you long after you finish the last page.
I am a slow reader, but found that I didn't want to put this book down. It held my interest all the way through. Congratulations to the author for a great novel. I highly recommend it to everyone!
Growing up in the 50's as the character in the book did I can appreciate the extreme differences between then and now.
Carol is a extemely talented author who held my interest on each and every page and was sorry to see the book end.
Her characters seem so true to life and believable.
Would definetly read a sequel to find out what happened in the rest of her life.
I highly recommend all to read it no matter what age.
I happen to know the author which makes the book even more fun to read and enjoy.
