I got my first Stewart Awl over 40 years ago and used it to stitch new soles onto shoes, bind journals and repair heavy clothing. I got this one to stitch the frayed ends of my 5 foot by 8 foot American flag. It came with a straight needle, a curved needle and a large roll of waxed nylon thread. The awl fits easily in my medium size palm and is easy to work with. As one reviewer already noted; to stitch anything push the needle and thread through the fabric seam. Then pull out a length of thread slightly longer than the hem length. Then pull the needle back and push it into the next part of the fabric seam. Thread the long piece of thread through the nylon thread along the needle. Hold tight and pull the needle out of the fabric. Your stitch line will be on the backside. Simply cut the thread and tie the ends together when you are done. If you are stitching leather or heavy canvas it is wise to use an awl first to punch a hole. The needle on this stitching awl is NOT strong enough to do that. It will snap.

This device is very usefull and easy to use but $18 is a bit expensive for a simple awl stitcher. Have since found identical item by itself-not in kit- for $3 at Harbor Freight Store.

My husband, who cannot sew, used this to stitch up our leather sofa after our ridiculous dog thought it would be fun to go on a treasure hunt in the arm of our couch. Frankly, if a 40 year old man who can't even reconnect a button can mend our sofa, I'm thinking just about anyone can work this thing. A miracle!

I ordered this item for my son because he wants to get into leather working. The image shows two different awls. I have the speedy stitcher awl myself and thought he would like having both. I could get one of these for about half of the price listed for this item but as it showed both I went ahead and ordered it. Only the stitcher with the internal bobbin arrived. When I contacted the company they simply replied that the item was only the one stitcher with the spool of thread and the needle. It makes no sense to pay twice as much plus shipping to get something I could get much cheaper locally, but the company refuses to acknowledge that. Read the description VERY carefully because the image they adverstise has very little to do with what they are actually selling and integrity is apparently not a core value for this company.

I bought a stitcher like this one decades ago and have missed having it ever since I lost it. The Deluxe Stitcher Kit appears to be identical to the one I used to have. It is cheap, simple, and was able to repair my thick leather gloves. I also used it to re-stitch the cuff on my leather (welding) jacket. The thread is waxed to go through material more easily (which is needed), and the it is thick enough to be quite strong and not wear out quickly. This makes a wonderful addition to my tool box.
It is good for what is paid, but it would garner a 5 star rating with better materials and workmanship.

This kit is great! Comes with the stitcher (includes 2 needles in the stitcher plus a bobbin full of thread)...Plus 2 extra needles and a large spool of thread.

This stitcher is a MUCH better design than the old Awl for awl stitcher I've used in the past. A very good deal!

This is an excellent kit for repairing thick fabric! (We were using it to repair a rip in our folding lawn chair.) I am glad to have this...it looks like it will be handy to have. Be careful!! It is very easy to stab yourself when pushing this through thick fabric. The kit supplied everything needed including extra needles and beige thread. I am considering getting some black thread in case I am working on dark fabric...the beige was actually perfect for what I was doing. This is a sturdy and wonderful tool!

My son has a tent trailer, and the awning stitching was coming apart where it meets at the top guide bar. We tried a couple of things to fix it, including my sewing machine ( which was a disaster), needle and thread,(don't recommend, hard on the fingers, and ugly). He went on Amazon to look for
some kind of rivet machine or ? Came across the awl set, and it seemed the best bet to try. It worked great, had a bit of trouble getting the hang of it
but there's a video you can watch that made it easier. I sewed the whole seam across, took about two hours, and looks like a pro did it. I highly recommend
this kit.
