Now that I got that straight, I marvel at just how little blood is sufficient to take a measurement, and at how quickly the device works (typically 1 second to "beep" and another 1-2 seconds to produce the value on screen). I bought a second, identical device for my place of work and it functions identically well.
I took comparative measurements with different strips from the same box and from different boxes with different expiration dates. From the same box, measurements taken with the same device, or with the 2 different devices, on the same drop of blood, yielded values within 1-2 mg/dL out of typically 100 mg/dL. When taken from different boxes, strips with shorter remaining shelf life (expiration date sooner) boght online tended to measure 5-8 mg/dL lower than strips taken from a newer, pharmacy-bought box.
Which brings me to a cautionary point: The strips required for this device are EXPENSIVE. Bought at the CVS pharmacy as a box of 50, including 8.25% sales tax, you're looking at $1.62 per strip! Bought online, you can get away with as little as $0.50/strip in quantities of 50, but risking receiving a box near its expiration date which, in my experience, matters.
Update 07/03/2013: I have purchased a second Freestyle Freedom Light meter and tested with each both before and after my latest lab Fasting Glucose test. Here's the results:
Lab : 106
45 Minutes Prior to Lab Test *
Freestyle Lite #1: 107
Freestyle Lite #2: 100
5 Minutes After Lab Test **
Freestyle Lite #1: 105
Freestyle Lite #2: 104
* Separate Drops of Blood
** Same Drop of Blood
No doubt about it, this the most accurate meter you can buy!
the meter automatically turns on when you insert the test strip and waits for 30 seconds for you to provide a sample. When you turn the meter on without a test strip it displays your 7 day average automatically and keeps track of the last 60 days of test results.
The strips are relatively cheap with my insurance, but are also available for about $25 for 50 strips here on amazon. I would highly recommend this meter to anyone who is looking for something new.
