This definitely follows up the first one with a bang. It picks up where book one dropped off, where Gabrielle is still left at the mercy of White Hand…which means she’s stuck in limbo waiting for someone to tell her something useful or for Iron Cross to send more people after her.
This book may be a little shorter than the first one, but it’s filled with just as much action. After another surprise attack, one they aren’t lucky to get out of untouched, Gabrielle is forced to push her abilities more than she ever has.
“What is it that you want me to do to convince Dustin?” she asked Lisa, keeping her voice as casual as possible. “I can’t even get him to stop using the nickname I hate.”
It does vary a lot between present and past tense, a little more than I would have liked, but it’s still a good read. It delves into the characters a little more and we get a deeper look at Dustin, which I cannot wait to find out more about. There’s also Sasha and James, whom I’m trying to decide if one of them is the leak. And Gabrielle finally comes to terms with her feelings for Dustin. Maybe we’ll get to see if they’re reciprocated in the next book.
My Favorite Moment: Bad timing, maybe, but I loved it when Gabrielle was trying to get through to a stubborn Dustin.
“DUSTIN! Look at me! I know you can hear me, you jerk!”
