Dec 31, 2005
$5.00
This book uncovers the role of gender and sexuality discourses in the construction of the Cuban nation and how they have been used to define and regulate the notions of nationality and sovereignty from the nineteenth century to the present. Through archival work and the analysis of war diaries, press campaigns, novels and magazines, the book provides a rigorous historical analysis of how the sexual/gender “others” have been coupled with social and political deviance at different periods in Cuban history. The second part of the book updates this debate through a pioneer ethnographic study of Cuban transvestites, transsexuals, and homosexuals. Abel Sierra Madero has been awarded the 2012 Martin Duberman Fellowship by City
