Customers are mixed about the camera. Some mention that the recording quality is good, the wide viewing angle, and easy installation. The fish-eye lens makes it capable of viewing across the dashboard, and it doesn't block the driver's view. The product is plastic, but feels well made.
The mirror is nice and long, but is a bit dimmer than a normal mirror.
The instructions on setting up the camera are a bit jumbled, but easy to follow.
I can't comment on the sound as I had it turned off (I don't want to hear myself singing haha).
To me, the most important part, and the deciding factor in getting this, was video quality. There are 3 settings, Full HD, HD, and 640x480 (or something like that). I did several tests in the morning, afternoon, and at night.
*Full HD is a much wider video, but for me, the picture was too bright, and I would have to get closer than 10 feet to see the license plate in front of me at a full stop.
*HD is a not as wide as Full HD, but the picture quality was outstanding; it was much more natural looking. I could also see license plates from farther away stopped, but also while driving (not crystal clear, but good enough).
*640x480 was much smaller than the two above, not as clear, but had the same natural look as above.
Lastly, it starts up right when I turn the power on in my car, with all the settings saved.
My suggestions:
Put it in HD video mode
Put it at 4Gs (it's set at 6G when you receive it (in US at least))
Get a 32GB SDHC Class 10 Card
I will say though that the model I got had some problems, so I had to return it. It would randomly restart, and then when that stopped, it kept saying the SD card I had in was wrong, even though it was the one provided. I'll eventually get a new one as this is a great product, highly recommended.
*UPDATE*
I recently purchased a new one and received it today. My other one must've been an older model because this one has several new settings. This new one includes a parking mode where the camera will record up to a minute after an impact on the car, which is a great feature. The next one is where you can adjust the exposure of the picture, making it lighter or darker. The next new feature is "metering" and, after contacting the seller, it looks like it measures the amount of light...? Please correct me in the comments if I'm wrong, but I would leave the setting on it's original selection, which I believe is "center."
*MINOR UPDATE*
I tweaked with the exposure levels on the Full HD setting to see if it would be as good as the HD quality. After doing a few tests, I would still recommend the HD setting as it is more natural and fluid.
My purchase of the HDVR-150 was supposed to be from the OEM supplier KiWAV, however, Amazon shipped me something imported from Taiwan from another seller, and I do not know if the products are the same or not. Abeo/KiWAV will NOT honor any warranty or provide support if you do not buy from KiWAV only. The imported Product I received explains why the first product I have received did not have English (or much of it) on the package, or in the instructions, and why English was NOT the default language the device was set up with (when viewing menus etc...). So, I RETURNED the imported product and have since purchased the OEM version meant for the United states. I actually upgraded to the HDVR-180 G3, also sold from Abeo. It wasn't much more money to upgrade and I will write a review on the replacement soon. So, if you are buying this HDVR-150, make sure you are buying from KiWAV! At the time of my purchase, the imported product and the OEM product were both the same price of $78, so make sure you know which one you are getting!
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
For the price of this camera ($78 at the time of purchase), I'm very impressed with it. I'll start with the downsides, but please know that despite the shortcomings I describe first, that overall I really like this device and plan to get another one:
Cons:
The instructions and packaging are mostly in Chinese (e.g. not English). The user manual is weak at best, and navigation on the device itself is very challenging initially because the default language was set to Chinese (which I can NOT read). So, trying to get the menu language set to English was the hardest part. There's also an extra menu item under the video settings menu that does not seem to be explained, and that is Video Looping Time. I cannot find in the manual what that means. Once I had menu settings in English, menu navigation was MUCH easier. From there, I tweaked a few more settings and set up the date/time. However, any time my device is shut off, it forgets the date/time and defaults back to 2011. The device does retain other custom menu settings though, such as leaving the video screen on all the time (as opposed to 1min sleep mode which was default). And lastly, the device needs more buttons. There's an up button, a down button, and a button that will make you think it was the day/night switch but it's not. Maybe the more expensive units can address these "issues" I've described, but you have to keep in perspective this is a $78 camera. I didn't want to put hundreds of dollars into this camera. I wanted something simple and cheap that works.
Neither Pro or Con:
As far as comments at that are neither good or bad, or possibly conflicting with specs online: My packaging/instructions did say (in what limited English was there) is that there is 8GB of memory built into the device and that a memory card is optional. I already have a memory card (several in fact), so I installed a 32GB anyway. The instructions call for a minimum class 4 or 4G rated memory card. Mine happened to be Class 10 so I guess that means my memory card is ok (I am not a memory card expert). Some other reviewers on amazon said they got a free SD card with the purchase of this device, and at least one person said they got a personal thank you note from the seller. I did not get a free SD card or a note. But then again, my device came with a free 8GB internal memory, so maybe there was a device upgrade at some point that the other reviewer(s) had older devices that did not have internal memory? The device does not seem to have day/night adjustment to it. The button that looks like it might do this is a menu navigation button. Some people have complained they cannot flip the sunvisors down without bumping this device, but I have not had this issue. The device width is 12 1/2 inches, so you may want to measure how much space you have between your visors.
Pros:
What's good about this camera? Once you turn the key on, it's recording. It runs off your lighter outlet (therefore make sure your lighter outlet works). You don't 'have to think about turning it on/off every time you're going to use it. The video quality appears to be very good. It takes audio too, but so far, I have audio turned off and don't intend to use it. It also takes snapshots, which I didn't' realize it could do before I bought it. I also didn't realize right away that the camera is adjustable left to right. When I first attached the device to my OEM car mirror, the camera was pointed too far to the passenger side/right side (because that's how your mirror points). I later figured out I could turn the camera separately. It can be pivoted left/right. The device lets you switch to playback mode, and you can watch video/pictures previously recorded right on your mirror--cool! This means you can see immediately if you captured whatever it was you were trying to record, all without having to pull the SD card and try to view on a computer. The only bummer is you cannot delete individual videos/snapshots (unless I am not finding how to do it). You must either re-format the whole card while installed in the device (and lose everything you recorded), or you must take it to a computer to delete some/all content. Another bonus is the device is also fairly invisible to anyone outside your car. It's NOT some clunky thing sitting on top your dashboard that maybe perhaps looks like GPS, asking to be stolen by thieves. Instead, it sits clipped to your OEM car mirror and doesn't stand out very much. The device is 12 1/2" wide from end to end. My car's mirror is only 9 1/2" wide (older car). Our newer car's mirror is 10 1/2" wide. The device fits both mirrors just fine. So, this device is indeed wider than most/all rear viewer mirrors, but when you think about it, it really needs to be wider or you end up losing viewing space compared to what you had with the OEM mirror. You have to remember, that this mirror has a small video screen built into it, and that takes up some of your mirror's square footage. Because of the extra mirror width (and viewing space I have vs. my OEM mirror), I have my mirror/device adjusted so that it's slightly skewed showing too much of the passenger side, but it only looks that way if the video display is not on. Once the video display is turned on, and that part of the mirror is now "lost," the rest of the mirror is still about the same as what I had before (and showing everything properly centered). If I leave the display off, then I actually have more mirror space than I used to. Hopefully that makes sense. As for the device's color, the device is black, and one of our car's mirrors is black, so this device blends in very well. One of our cars has a light grey mirror though, so this device stands out a little bit more when installed in that car (so I may be eventually painting my car's OEM mirror black to match). The device attaches to your mirror easily via a couple spring loaded "clamps" at the top, as well as two suction cups. I don't expect the suction cups too last long, but the spring loaded clamps seem to be sufficient on their own. Installation was easy, though I didn't try to hide the wiring too hard, meaning, I did not remove the headliner or interior trim panels to hide wiring. We will possibly be moving this camera back and forth from vehicle to vehicle, so I don't want to spend 2 hours hiding wiring if I am going to take it back out again switching cars for the day. That being said, at this point I intend to buy a second one of these devices. If you decide to thoroughly hide your wiring, you will be on your own and results will vary depending on what vehicle you own (and how easy/hard that vehicle brand makes it for you to remove panels and hide wires!).
One last note, some people have described that the device weighs down your mirror to the extent your mirror won't stay up, or flops down with every bump. Well, yes, the device adds some weight to the mirror, and yes, my mirror got too heavy and would pivot down, however, all our car's mirrors had tiny adjusting screws on the back side (which faces forward) and I was able to tighten the car's OEM mirror so it wouldn't flop around so easily. And now, mine is adjusted perfectly. It's still loose enough to adjust without much fuss, but not too loose that it swings down with every bump. I don't think this device is heavy enough to cause your OEM mirror to literally fall off your windshield unless your OEM mirror was weak and about ready to fall off anyway.
