This dark novella is full of twists, violence and down-right nastiness. Halfwerk has put together an emense amount of story in this novella. The concept is intriguing and well thought out. The main character, Robert, is flawed, and this comes through clearly, in this well-written horror. The final twist at the end was unexpected, as was the reason behind all the horrors. But if I’m honest, which I always am in my reviews, it felt like there was almost too much going on in a story of this length. It needed to either be longer, or shortened up. Or maybe it was the quick wrap-up after a lengthy set-up. I’m just not sure.
I enjoyed the story. I’d recommend it to the horror fans out there. It won’t be for everyone, as there is a bit of graphic-ish gore and a bit of sex, but in general it’s a good solid story.
3.5 of 5 Stars (Rounds to 4)
Halfwerk has written a well-developed story full of mystery, suspense, thrills, and crime. It includes some paranormal activity and scenes that can make your skin crawl. I read most of this book in one sitting because I literally could not put it down. By the end of the book, I was left unnerved and in need to step away.
Aberrancy deserves no less than a 5-star rating due to its well-written and capturing storyline. It's the type of book that keeps the reader questioning and guessing. I recommend this book to those who enjoy the unsettling feeling some novels leave you and don't mind some mention of evil. If you are not this type of person, you're advised to stay away!
I can’t tell you who it is, of course. That would spoil the story, Suffice to say, it is not what you expect. Not what you expect at all.
Su Halfwerk is a consummate horror writer. She is adept at handling the slow build-up of suspense until the paranoia is screwed up to screaming point. She also writes in flawless English, such a pleasure to read.
A really excellent book.
