I write and play rock and roll and record instruments and vocals through an interface so I don't use the MIDIs. I think if you're a producer looking for a program to make beats you'll probably want to look at a version above Intro. It seems like you'd be limited by a fairly small number of MIDIs that you could work with.
This has is a very generous feature set for a "lite" version. Almost good enough to never upgrade ; )
Like it says, it is an intro to music creation at a great price. The idea is that you don't have to spend $400+ on a product that you may discard if music production isn't for you. Ableton live intro is loaded with with almost all the features of ableton live 8, you can make some great proffesional sounding tracks.
As you learn more and advance you will definately notice the limitations of intro and want to upgrade to Ableton Live 8. This is great because with both your purchases you will still spend the same amount of money as jumping straight into live 8, but you would have figured out the ableton is the right software for you and already have learned a ton of cool stuff. I have spent $500+ on music software in the past that I do not use and never really got to grips with, this time I am happy to spend money upgrading this intro software to live 8.
Ableton is the easiest to use most intuitive daw on the market in my opinion.
