The premise is that it's a movie about the issue of suicide. But it's actually just your typical post-college weekend get together movie (they even come right out and say this in the dialogue). What were we then, what do we want to be, what are we now, do we still want to be that, do we want something else, yada yada. I actually really liked it, though. Why? Great cast who know how to bring characters to life with depth and heart. Plaza and Greenfield gave the strongest performances. Good chemistry. They could carry a movie on their own.

I really enjoyed this movie. For some reason, this movie reminded me of some movies we saw in the 80's. Even though they were really nothing alike in terms of actual story, the movie reminded me of St. Elmo's Fire...it kinda had the same feel. There was nothing earth shattering about the story...nothing groundbreaking or shocking in what happens. It's basically just the story of several imperfect characters who were friends in college, went their separate ways, and are brought back together because of circumstances. In the process, there is a lot of reminiscing and a lot of old feeling are brought back to the surface. I think that is a situation that many of us can relate to. I liked how the story never got too cliche, and didn't try to go too over the top which would make it seem much less realistic.

What made the movie enjoyable was the characters. If the characters don't strike a cord with the audience, a movie like this has no chance of being successful. I felt the writing was good, and I really felt the actors did a decent job in nurturing their roles. Surprisingly, the one person who most impressed me in this film was Aubrey Plaza. I'm familiar with her and her comic schtick, and honestly wasn't a big fan. But this film showed that she is really so much more than that and proved that she really has really good range as an actor.

Again, nothing 'special' about the movie, but if you like films that are reminiscent of some of those 80's character driven stories, you may enjoy this one.

here we have an updated version of "the Big Chill" which I loved. Right off the bat they had me. Toss in a very talented young cast and bingo, I'm there. The only difference in this one...Small spoiler......he lives to tell about it and join in on the weekend. Jason Ritter tries to commit suicide and all his buds from college go to make sure he will be okay. In the meantime, they have their own issues to work out. As I said very talented and very Big Chill-ish. I enjoyed it and the dialog was fast and furious too.

this was an interesting movie a bunch of good friends from collage get together after a spell not just to reminisce but to watch over their friend alex who attempted suicide but at the last moment was able to reach out to them I got this for Maggie grace I love her acting and she was great of course so was the rest of this cast its basically a new version like the big chill which they mention in the movie The conversations are interesting as well as challenging as they confront each other on the question why did they ignore alex all this time before his suicide but in the end the confrontations make them even stronger as not just old classmates but friends for life

"About Alex", written and directed by Jesse Zwick brings a group of six college friends together for three days after an unsuccessful suicide attempt of their friend, Alex (Jason Ritter). Also under the same roof of Alex's home is the "plus one", much younger girlfriend, Kate (Jane Levy) brought by their friend Isaac, (Max Minghella). All five of his closest friends, including himself and making it six in total, are in varied positions on how they stand with what Alex has done and are in a state of flux over their own relationships colliding and many boundaries crossing the same space. A very character and dialog driven movie, this brings out the strangest of bedfellows and the oddest of friendships. A sweet natured Sarah (Aubrey Plaza) and an extremely acerbic Josh (Max Greenfield), give the stronger performances and seem to carry this film creating a modest tension. They cannot fully understand their constant arguing and attraction at the same time. Ben (Nate Parker) and Siri (Maggie Grace) were once a couple as her character is not as defined as Ben's. He is a writer with a huge writer's block at this time.

Upon arrival, Sarah begins treating Alex with kid gloves while feeling guilt and remorse for not being there for him. Josh never misses a cheap shot or is apathetic to it all. Ben feels incredible guilt and Siri is supportive but full of a situation happening with herself. Kate, while not even knowing this group whatsoever, reminded me of the 'Meg Tilly' character in Lawrence Kasdan's, "The Big Chill". Actually, many things reminded me of that picture concerning all of them being under one roof, all handling a friend's resembling situation and having the same types of feelings.

I badly want to give About Alex 1 star because it's almost completely terrible but there's something about the occasional worthwhile moment (or perhaps the calm atmosphere) that makes it passable on a couple occasions. Or maybe because I felt the story tried going somewhere a couple times. When I say "the occasional moment" I'm only referring to the few times the characters actually show emotion and concern that their friend just tried committed suicide. Everyone can apparently cope with it just fine oddly enough while feeling no sadness or real concern whatsoever. The fact the movie uses young immature adults as a concept that's supposed to stress the significance of suicide is its biggest downfall. These young adults are more concerned with petty trivial issues that involve useless relationship troubles that are meaningless, often times intolerable and completely out of place compared to the bigger issue of a friends suicide attempt which feels wrong.

The movie moves along like this- these people spend time together at a remote home in the countryside despite slight resentment towards one another which results in the occasional witty and/or sarcastic lines (especially by Max Greenfield, the only intelligent one there capable of delivering a few decent attention grabbing lines now and then and the only truly memorable character as a result) then everyone starts magically getting along perfectly fine halfway through the film while the suicidal portion of the storyline gets momentarily pushed aside or in other words written out of the script, before finally showing support/concern/actual friendship by the movies conclusion. By then it's too late of course.

However there's another problem. Two actually.
