The great irony is that industry analysts are supposed to be cruelly insightful. They hold nothing back in their objective analysis. Gideon's book is an extended resume where the unpleasant is hidden and the positive is stressed.
That is not to say that there is not value in About Gartner. It is not poorly written. There are some clues to Gideon's thinking as he gave birth to what is now the biggest analyst firm by far.
Someday I hope to read a history of Gartner, the company, that goes into the Manny Hernandez years and beyond.
Today, many people recognize Gartner (the company) as a force in the technology industry. The story of how the man developed the idea, demonstrated the tenacity, drove the vision, and, most of all, inspired the people makes for a great read for anyone who wonders how the company came to be what it is, or what's required to start a game-changing company.
This book brought back many great memories and maybe inspired me to create a few more. I'm sure that would make Gideon most proud of all.
Even while all this is going on, the book will show how a business man and engineer like Gideon Gartner can play corporate hardball and yet retain his humanity, his love of the arts and concern for his employees.
