I would recommend starting with Level 1 for younger students and Level 2 for older ones. Level 2 does quickly review the main topics taught in 1 but I'm glad that I took the time to go through 1 with my student. I think Level 2 would've been frustrating for him to start off with.
Level 1 covers the following topics: the letters of the alphabet and their sounds; segmenting words into their component sounds; short & long vowels; consonant blends; soft c and g; knowing when to use c vs. k vs. ck for spelling the /k/ sound; doubling f, l, and s and the end of words; spelling compound words; making words plural by adding -s or -es; counting syllables; and open & closed syllables.
Highly recommended for homeschoolers, tutors, and parents of struggling spellers looking to remediate at home.
I am just finishing up level 1 with my first two students (9 yrs and 8 yrs) and looking forward to continuing the program. It's easy to use as a teacher, the students are enjoying it (some days more than others - it is school after all), and I have seen improvement in their spelling. Before starting this program my 9 yr old hated to spell things out because his younger sister (8yrs) was better than himself, it was embarrassing to always be wrong. All About Spelling has bolstered his confidence and given him the tools he needs to spell correctly when he chooses to think through and take the time. He isn't a great speller yet, but he is less hesitant and more confident which is a great start.
