Review

"In a world too often filled with lurid sexual lyrics written by people whose emphasis only embraces the physical. PJ Morton has substituted the far more fulfilling spiritual emphasis on love lyrics, much like the Song of Solomon. He is bringing back the long overdue focus to the love God says a man should have for his wife. The closer we get to real love in our home, the more we understand the God that gives us someone to love." --Bishop T.D. Jakes<br /><br />"There is no reason that as a collective group of people with spiritual roots, we can't sing about love. That is what is has always been about ...love." --Al Green<br /><br />"What comes out of PJ Morton is something close to amazing. Its connection to all of scripture shows that love has always been important to the Father and His people. If not, there would be no Song of Solomon. Love and love music, God's way." - --Kirk Franklin

PJ Morton offers a sincere and insightful perspective about music in his book Why Can't I Sing about Love. Human beings are so accustomed to limiting God that we sometimes lose sight of that fact that He is the creator of all things; including music. Sure, some have morphed the music God fashioned to bring Him glory into something contrary to His intention, but that doesn't mean we as true believers cannot take it back. PJ is leading a revolution of musicians that see Christ as love, and are not afraid to take a stand for Christ, and sing about love, His way.

Although the book doesn't offer the critical analysis of the Bible's position of romantic love or go beyond a shallow analysis of music in the Bible, it is valuable in it's presentation of how a Christian can struggle navigating in a spiritually bi-polar world and experience psychological vulnerabilities similar to those of DuBois' tragic mulatto -- Tragic Christians. Not a total loss.

This book was so brief that it could be read on a flight or a quick trip on the subway. I was amazed by the depth of it even in its brevity. PJ Morton did a stellar job communicating the heart of a worshipper, writer, and lover of love. His understanding of the Christian responsibility to represent the whole Bible (SOS included) is brilliant! Musicians and lovers of music should read this and gain great understanding of the beauty of God's music--which isn't necessarily just singing about his amazing grace.
