For being a Dove award-winning album, it's awfully boring. The songs all have the same beat and the lyrics are a bit more shallow than I'd like. It's not the usual quality recording I expect from PCD.

Prime Cuts: Voices from the Other Side, Let It Be Known, Jesus Only Jesus

Phillips, Craig & Dean (PCD)'s new album "Above It All" is as reliable and satisfying as meat and potatoes. Just like their 13 preceding albums, "Above It All" is lyrically packed with enough spiritual carbohydrates ample to sustain us with its rich Biblical nourishments. Given that all three members of PCD are all senior pastors of different churches, they have fine combed through the content of these 10 songs making sure that the songs are not only deeply imbedded in orthodoxy, but just a like a good sermon they have a relevancy that still speak volumes into our own walk with the Lord. However, such consistency is also a double-edged sword. On one hand, it's hard to fault these songs lyrically. On the other hand, sonically nothing on this album really surprises or moves out of PCD's comfort zones. Just like their countless proceedings, there's the fair share of big bombastic pop ballads formulaically balanced with by its share of chiming guitar driven pop blasters.

PCD have been a mainstay of contemporary Christian music since 1992 when they released eponymous debut album. Over the years, they have had serviced Christian radio and the church with songs such as "Turn Up the Radio," "Concert of the Ages," "My Praise," "Here I Am to Worship," and many others. However, their biggest career high came when their album "Fearless" was released in 2009. The record sold over 10,000 copies during its first week and reached number 46 on Billboard 200, becoming the trio's highest-debuting album to date. The album's first single was "Revelation Song" reached number and stayed at the top for 11 weeks.

On a recent trip I went to bed feeling utterly discouraged. I woke the next morning with “Come as You Are” going through my mind, one of ten songs from Above it All by Phillips Craig & Dean.

The melody and words conveyed a sense of God’s presence and comfort:

Come as you are
As you are
with your heart wide open
And broken
Come as you are
With your wounds and your scars

I appreciate the encouragement to come in my brokenness. It implies acceptance despite failure, which broadens my outlook.

Grace and hope are themes in this recording. The opening, “What Hope Feels Like,” puts it like this:

It's nothing but open road
Now that I'm not alone
I'm saying hello to life
This is what hope feels like

The open road is a picture of no obstacles and progress on the journey. Not being alone, having Christ in one’s life, leads to a brighter day.

I'm learning to live again
I'm learning to love again
I'm learning to dream again
It's like I've been born again

Those with more sophisticates tastes can easily find fault with praise-band worship styles, but I recognize that it can add power to the lyrics. It can be like the sound of rushing waters. After my dark night of the soul, the strong melody and the words of “Come as You Are,” reminded me that God was with me. I could begin again. That very morning my scheduled reading included: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). If I can only keep coming no matter what happens, I will find rest.

Phillips Craig & Dean are among the artists that rose to prominence with the surge in modern forms of worship.

Another great album from PCD. Great songs and beautiful multi part harmony. It's getting to the place where I just go ahead and pre-order their album when I hear they are coming out with a new release. I haven't been disappointed for years. Great album!

Absolutely fantastic album. It's a permanent fixture in my car as I play it anytime I am driving. Listening to it brings visions of what it would be like for the entire heavenly body to be singing. It has such a calming effect as it puts you in the presence of the Lord Almighty.

Love PCD, but this album is very secular sounding and quite honestly sounds like they have sold out.

Been a fan of these guys since they dropped Let My Words Be Few in the early 2001. Though I'm more of a Christian Rock and Gospel Hip Hop Fan, these old dudes as I call them, really bring it. The lyrics. The melodies. The way they sing their songs with meaning and purpose, I always keep them in my ipod with guys like Lecrae, Tobymac, Crowder, and Kutless. This album is really good. I always listen to an album twice before I review it and I can safely say that this is a solid 4 and just maybe a 5 as I did not delete any songs from it. Lets say 4.5 I guess. It's close in sound to their last album Breathe In, though different enough. For example did Phillips Craig and Dean join Planetshakers? The song Let It Be Known is a great song if you like electronic rock anthems. I'm not familiar with any of these songs so it looks like they are continuing to release all original work as opposed to having a few worship covers on the album as they they have in the past on earlier albums. Not opposed to covers as I've liked all of their covers. Just another reason this album is so well done. Tough to say what my favorites are right now because tracks 1-8 are just so good and for different reasons, another reason this album is 4 stars. In conclusion, if you have all PCDs worship albums then pick this one up. Great music. Great lyrics. Great all around.
