Above an Angry Sea: United States Navy B-24 Liberator and PB4Y-2 Privateer Operations in the Pacific October 1944 - August 1945 (Schiffer Military History) Paperback – April 6, 2001

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

Above an Angry Sea chronicles USN B-24 Liberator (PB4Y-1) and PB4Y-2 Privateer operations in the Pacific. The author's previous book, We Flew Alone, discussed the Navy's use of the B-24 Liberator from February 1943 to September 1944. He now examines in dramatic detail the use of the B-24 and PB4Y-2 during the last eleven months of the war against Japan. The author has collected personal stories, over 200 photographs, a tabulation of all aerial kills credited to PB4Y patrol plane commanders, a roster of all personnel killed in action or in the line of duty, individual squadron records, and a list of all known B-24 Liberators and PB4Y-2 Privateers assigned to the Pacific between 1943 and 1945.

My Dad served flying in a PB4Y .
Great addition to my ww2 library.

I purchased Above The Angry Sea 2nd Edition to Study the heroics of my personal hero Commander Sheldon Sutton, WWII decorated , VPB-117 Blue Raider Crew 18 Commander. Above The Angry Sea 2nd Edition is the passionate life work of author Alan Carey , whose father Army 2nd class Robert Carey , gallantly fought with VPB 109 - The Reluctant Raiders . The dedication that produced this book is evidenced by the minute attention to detail including documentation of fallen heroes of VPB squadrons who paid the ultimate price, PB4Y Summary of Operations , Individual Squadron Records , PB4Y Aerial Claims of Confirmed Kills and a myriad of photographs. But calling Above The Angry Sea 2nd Edition is akin to calling Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel masterpiece a painting on the ceiling. Although I had studied the exploits of the Blue Raiders on the Blue Raider website, it was from Above The Angry Sea 2nd Edition that I first learned how Commander Sutton achieved the distinction of Flying Ace , usually reserved for single engine fighter aviators ,while commanding his outstanding crew of their 4 engine PB4YLiberator. The photos alone pull back the curtain on these brave patriots as they literally saved Western civilization over 70 years ago.
As I read aloud Alan Carey's narrative of the Blue Raider Crew 18's record seven enemy kills to the Sutton Family, Commander Sutton's attention was riveted on Above The Angry Sea 2nd Edition as if he had stepped back in time. One almost would have thought that Alan Carey had flown second seat .When I asked Commander Sutton what he thought of Alan Carey's account , he replied ," Just outstanding , just fabulous."
If one of your family members served in a VPB squadron , Above The Angry Sea 2nd Edition needs to be in your library because this is a chronicle of your heritage.

Reading this book gives me some insight of the flying and whereabouts my father flew during WWII. He was injured during the war, but later died in a plane crash in the US so I was never able to discuss any of these times with him. Thank you Alan Carey for providing me with some information of his life during the war.

This book covers the deeds and exploits of the Navy patrol bombing squadrons that flew the PB4Y-1 and 2 during the Second World War. My father Allen C. Morgan was one of these men, serving as a navigator in VD-3 and a Patrol Plane Commander in VPB-102. After a lifetime of his stories I was amazed more people did not know about the things these men accomplished. Mr. Carey's book was a revelation.in enlightening me about the organization, formation and operation of these units. It's also a thrilling read as you fly with these men during low-level attacks on heavily defended bases and convoys. It is well illustrated with many photographs. And yes, I found my Dad in here in a couple of places including him being named as the first bomber pilot to land on Iwo Jima, a story my Dad often told but which I had never found concrete evidence for til I found this book. An important book which will hopefully inform.and bring these brave and unique men their rightful.place in the annals of military history.

The book was very good from the standpoint of showing an uninformed family what the plane I flew in as a combat gunner was all about. Even though he left out a lot about my squadron and slighted us for other units it did not deminish my interest in others who were justly remembered. There are a lot of people who knew nothing about Navy heavy bombers and the book certainly introduced them to our war. Thank you. I have purchased a lot of these books as presents for my family and friends.

This is one of the most informative and telling documentation I have ever read. I highly recomend the reading of this book. It would be a great addition to any historian's library. Every page is loaded with personal accounts of what it was really like to fight above the ANGRY SEA! Mr. Carey has captured the true essence of life on a PB4Y. If Spielberg could get a hold of this book, there would be a great movie made.

Mein Fazit: voll empfehlenswert!
