British author and academic GODFREY RATHBONE BENSON, 1st Baron Charnwood (1864-1945) also wrote the biography *Theodore Roosevelt* (1923).

    Every compliment about this book is true so I will not attempt to add to them. I enjoyed the point of view of the writer as a third party, some fifty years after the conflict, in 1916. Lord Charnwood performed epic research and his observations are quite interesting and exceptionally enlightening.
    If one is learning more about the Civil War, and about Lincoln's philosophy and actions, this is a must-read.
    My complaint in this review is the tight binding of the book by General Press, New Delhi. It is difficult to fold open. At about page 160 I finally decided to gently flex the book open and it separated from the cover. This helped only a bit and certainly made the book unwieldy. I had hoped to make this book a family "keeper" due to the significant document that the book happens to be. But the tight binding and separation make its survival "through the centuries" questionable. Find another publisher.
    The book is magnificent, more than five star. The binding, maybe a two at best.

    Lord Charnwood (Godfrey Benson) was a respected British scholar and politician, born the year before Lincoln's assassination. He was not born of nobility but was made a Baron by King George V in 1911, five years before this book was published. His scholarship is apparent in this impressive biography of Lincoln.

    Although "Abraham Lincoln" was written by an Englishman for Englishmen (Charnwood's own words) and his admiration of Lincoln is apparent from the beginning, the book is an objective, fascinating history that Americans can appreciate. The book was written in the historical "sweet spot"- decades removed from the tragedy of the American Civil War and Lincoln's assassination but not so distant that memories had faded and historical records vanished. In fact, Lincoln's son Robert had just been named ambassador to England.

    This is not a lightweight biography; but an intelligent, comprehensive look at not only Lincoln but also other great personalities of his times as well as US history. The second chapter of the book alone is an interesting history of the early US prior to Lincoln. Spending time to give context adds greatly to our understanding of the man.

    Americans learn about Lincoln in grade school so it is not surprising that the stories of Lincoln tend to be simple. Later studies of American history focus more on the American Civil War and the fight to end slavery than Lincoln the man and his overall philosophies. As a result many of us have a child's view of Lincoln with a simple acceptance of him as an icon/hero. Lord Charnwood's biography gives us a deeper view of Lincoln the man, the politician, his core beliefs and personality. Charnwood shows a man of great intellect and ambition, who was remarkably pure of heart and crude of taste. A man befuddled and shy of women but a champion of women's rights from the beginning of his career. A man who was admired for his honesty and humor but who suffered from chronic depression. A man who abhorred slavery from his youth but whose driving motivation was preservation of the Union above all else.

    The true greatness of an individual is often obscured by anecdotes and myths that surround them. Abraham Lincoln is a classic example of this. I much prefer the hero Charnwood reveals to a one dimensional myth.

    As a final note, this kindle version is very well formatted but there is a "trick" at the end. After the final chapter, appendix, biographical note and chronology, the book seems to end. Go to the table of contents and you can follow links to more content including Lee's opinion of the war and correspondence between Lee and Herbert Saunders.

    Lord Charnwood published Abraham Lincoln in 1916. In order to get a clearer perspective of the Civil War, it helps to read books from multiple viewpoints. Lord Charnwood wrote only fifty years after the war, bringing an almost contemporaneous perspective to his depictions. His biography has the advantage of proximity but with enough time elapsed to dampen the passions of the moment. More important, as an English depiction, it is a simultaneously a distant point of view. It is a distance of more than nautical miles. Lord Charnwood also brings the bias of English nobility to his descriptions. This is exceptionally important in gaining an understanding of the diplomatic imperative for both sides. The Confederacy desperately sought European recognition of their legitimacy, while Lincoln did everything in his power to deny international recognition and suppress arms and funding from abroad. Lincoln’s success was arguably pivotal to eventually making victory possible.
    Abraham Lincoln, by Lord Charnwood can be a tough read. A simple, declarative sentence is beyond the baron. This is partly due to the style of the times and partly the way of academics who feel a need to qualify every utterance. Once the reader adjusts to the wordily writing, nuggets of rare perspective make the effort well worthwhile. For example, Thomas Jefferson is not one of my favorite Founders and Lord Charnwood seems to have shared some of my reservations. He also makes other political observations that an American might be reluctant to express.
    If you have an interest in the mid-nineteenth century, Abraham Lincoln by Lord Charnwood can be an enlightening read.

    The book was written 100 years ago by an Englishmen. That in itself makes the writing style different and at times difficult, wordy. I recommend this as a baseline review of Lincoln but it is too broad brush and lacks the depth some may be looking for in a biography.

    In the past 5 years I have read at least 15 books on Lincoln. Most of those biographies. What makes so many of us continually drawn to continue to want to more about Lincoln. I think because every caveat of information we learn about Lincoln the more we grow to understand the magnitude of the man. Yes, many people express he was a remarkable man in the right place and at the right time. I share that belief. Without his Presidential leadership before and during the Civil War, our country would very well have seen the Union dissolved forever. If he had not been asassinated at the beginning of the beginning of his second term, I think he would have made a remarkable President for the healing of our nation. His commitment to see real healing between North and South would have eternal benefit to not only North and South but to black and white relations. He would have been an inspiration to all people to be influenced our better "angels" . Had he been able to serve a second term we very likely would be a less divided country today. This book has not only its "caveats" of new inormation on Lincoln, but it also inspires in the reader to"raise the bar higher" to our individual and collective efforts to see our country as indeed one nation and one people. Simply put, we are all Americans.

This book has not only its "caveats" of new inormation on Lincoln, but it also inspires in the reader to"raise the bar higher" to our individual and collective efforts to see our country as indeed one nation and one people. Simply put, we are all Americans.

But before he gets into Lincoln's political career as President, he engages in an extended discussion of the checks and balances built into the original Constitution He also has interesting things to say about the balance between state and federal government power. It's a very useful discussion, and worth considering in our modern times.

    Even though I was surprised that the front cover of the Kindle book spelt the author's name incorrectly, I thoroughly enjoyed this biography. It was written more than a century ago and the benefit is that you don't get comparisons to many of the "modern"... Ver más
    Even though I was surprised that the front cover of the Kindle book spelt the author's name incorrectly, I thoroughly enjoyed this biography. It was written more than a century ago and the benefit is that you don't get comparisons to many of the "modern" wars, which could have cluttered the narrative. The author is writing for an English audience, and so terminology and events that would be self-evident to an American are carefully explained. The book makes many things clear about Lincoln and the Civil War which had always confused me before as a non-American. Despite writing so many years ago, the author's values and beliefs are liberal and "universal" and his approach to Lincoln is clear-eyed and balanced. His periods are a bit convoluted and his paragraphs are a bit long, but his choices in pulling out what he thought would enhance our knowledge of Lincoln, from the mass of material available to him, is impeccable.
