You know what they say about curiosity? It killed the cat. Well this killed my heart.
Olivia was a downright nasty bitch to her so called friend, Evelyn. Devon was a downright douchebag. To me, those two deserved each other, but what they didn't deserve was Evelyn. Olivia's so called "friend." I believe with everything in me that Olivia knew the feelings between Evelyn and Devon and yet continued to pursue Devon. She was evil to me with everything she did and made Evelyn watch it all unfold before her eyes a man she would forever love being pulled further and further away from her. Devon was a douchebag straight up, he had feelings for Evelyn yet never had the balls to do what was right, in other words he had his cake and was eating it too. This IS NOT a feel good story, Realistic? Maybe. Happy, No. This book was full of angst and torture, heartbreak and loss. Evelyns emotions were draining and I found myself very angry at Olivia and Devon for treating her as if she didn't matter.. because she did. She gave them her total loyalty and they in turn spit in her face with every action.
In the end Evelyn finds herself and her happily-ever-after and I would have loved to see more of that and less of the torture.
Good character development.
Good story development.
Well written no editing issues
I was so happy with this ending. Evie got an HEA that she deserved after being emotionally tormented for 10 years.
An ending with Devon would have felt wrong.
Devon ... wow not my favorite when it comes to characters. He's happily married to her best friend but won't let go of what might have been with Evie. As the story unfolds it's clear that he keeps the pot on simmer not quite encouraging Evie but enough to keep her in limbo. Maybe it wasn't intentional but it was cruel. The epilogue sums it all up when he tells Evie "Olivia was the best woman I've ever known". He stills loves her that's understandable and sweet but his next statement made my eyes water "you're a close second Evie" 😳. Wow just wow this guy was a piece of work. Not saying he shouldn't feel that way about his dead wife but he says it right after telling Evie they had something between them and Nate showing up ruined it. It was the same back and forth and it was unfair to Evie. Ugh !! I'm pulling my hair out again just thinking about him.
I would love to read an Evie and Nate story they didn't get enough pages.
While this wasn't a traditional "romance" or traditional NA book, it was definitely a book where there was growth with the characters. Some of it seemed redundant and like it wouldn't really go on like it does, but it is well paced going from past to present so you get the whole uncomfortable feeling you start to feel even at the beginning.
Olivia, Evelyn and Devon are the 3 past characters and Devon and Evelyn are the present characters. The past tells of a story of meeting someone at the wrong time and they go on to meet their person who happens to be your best friend. What would you do in that case? That's kind of what this story goes on and develops with. It's not easy and it's not always pretty. But when you have a best friend who is more like family, you give up so many things you normally would pursue.
Evelyn is such a sweet character and I'm glad she took us on a journey of her love for 2 friends, their children and then the love of herself. She had always put others before herself and when she finally puts herself first, it's kind of beautiful, but oh so very heartbreaking.
"You really love me that much?"
If you are looking for a pretty HEA or something that is supposed to be neat and all tied up in a bow in the end, this is not it. It's messy, but it's real. People have to make the best decisions for themselves and sometimes they eff it up royally. I saw a lot of that in Evelyn (and even Devon), but to see some people have a heart bigger than their head is pretty beautiful in itself. Even if it's not what you would've done.
I'm still conflicted with some things, but honestly, this story was true and real and I liked seeing Evelyn grow and having such a strong support system of people around her. She deserved that and so much more. GLad to see she got it!
"You deserve to be someone's first, Evelyn." <<<<Seriously, that man.....
This takes you on a tale of love and loss and how to find yourself again.
Beautifully written but I'm not sure if my heart can take reading on... *grabs giant box of kleenex* okay I'm prepared
