I met Devon and instantly fell for him.
Weeks later he fell for my best friend.
Never one to make waves, I watched as they started a life together. I stood by as their family grew, was the maid of honor at their wedding and the godmother to their children. All the while, I was longing for him, watching as he became the perfect husband and father. I was never jealous. I wasn’t even angry that my best friend had the only person I wanted. I had simply resigned myself to living without his love, but still being a part of his life.
Then, one terrible day, my best friend died.
She died and we all struggled to live life without her. Slowly, as the pain eased, our eyes opened and Devon finally saw me.
This is a story about second chances and second choices.
This is the story of how my life changed in the absence of Olivia.
WOW!!! This book was FANTASTIC!!!! The writing was absolutely flawless!! I LOVED Evelyn's character in this book! I don't want to give anything away.. THIS IS A MUST READ!!
Evelyn and Olivia are best friends and have been since young girls. While at college together Evelyn has a chance meeting with Devon when he comes to her rescue. She is captivated by him and wants to see him again. When she does run into him again weeks later he is on a date with her best friend Olivia. Throughout the time Olivia and Devon date sparks fly between Devon and Evelyn. Evelyn moves on to date another and there continues to be an attraction between her and Devon. Devon and Olivia eventually marry. Olivia later dies from cancer after she and Devon have had two children. Olivia's dying wish is for Evelyn to take care of Devon and her children. Can Evelyn grieve her best friend and be around Devon when she still loves him?
In the absence of Olivia do Devon and Evelyn explore what has been forbidden? The author breathes life into a story about death, devastation, new beginnings and life in the absence of Olivia.
The blurb of this book drew me in because I didn't know how to feel about this plot, but I knew I wanted to find out more. I couldn't deny my curiosity, knowing there was more to the story. Devon and Evelyn are definitely attracted to each other, even when Olivia is around, but Evelyn buried it deep so not to interfere and remained the supportive best friend. I could feel the unresolved tension and angst between them and wondered how things would have played out if Olivia had not been in the picture. I also needed to know if Devon truly loved Evelyn or if she was a second choice to Olivia.
Because this is Evelyn's story, I have to admit that I didn't care for Olivia. While Evelyn loved Olivia to the end of the earth and vice versa, I could not bring myself to tolerate Olivia even a little bit, dead or alive. Olivia was a barrier between Evelyn and Devon, before and after. Olivia isn't a villain, but I disliked her anyway.
What I really loved about this story was Evelyn's journey. She gave up so much of herself for Olivia and to Devon after Olivia's passing. While she is generous with her time and love, Evelyn is very guarded with her heart and has a tendency to run away when things become uncomfortable or confrontational. She has endless compassion and understanding. What Evelyn doesn't have is a solid grasp of herself. She doesn't know who she is independently of her friends or what she truly wants in life. She's spent so many years devoted to the needs of others, and lost in her feelings, while watching Devon and Olivia live the life she wanted.
Devon himself is a good guy. I really liked him a lot. He has the best intentions and his heart is in the right place. I wasn't sure he deserved Evelyn, though, unless he could prove that he saw her independently of Olivia and pursued her appropriately. The circumstances of their relationship was precarious because of the unique dynamics and the ball seemed to be in Evelyn's court so I wondered what was the sign she was looking for to move forward.
Then something happens and it becomes crystal clear to me, like it does to Evelyn, as to what her path should be and who she should be with. I loved the ending for this because it was absolutely perfect for Evelyn, to be worthy and wanted first and foremost. Once Evelyn embraced herself, she could allow herself to let someone in and to return that affection. The underlying message of the story speaks volumes so don't hesitate to read this if you think you know how it's going to end based on the blurb, because you might be surprised.
