You know what they say about curiosity? It killed the cat. Well this killed my heart.
Olivia was a downright nasty bitch to her so called friend, Evelyn. Devon was a downright douchebag. To me, those two deserved each other, but what they didn't deserve was Evelyn. Olivia's so called "friend." I believe with everything in me that Olivia knew the feelings between Evelyn and Devon and yet continued to pursue Devon. She was evil to me with everything she did and made Evelyn watch it all unfold before her eyes a man she would forever love being pulled further and further away from her. Devon was a douchebag straight up, he had feelings for Evelyn yet never had the balls to do what was right, in other words he had his cake and was eating it too. This IS NOT a feel good story, Realistic? Maybe. Happy, No. This book was full of angst and torture, heartbreak and loss. Evelyns emotions were draining and I found myself very angry at Olivia and Devon for treating her as if she didn't matter.. because she did. She gave them her total loyalty and they in turn spit in her face with every action.
In the end Evelyn finds herself and her happily-ever-after and I would have loved to see more of that and less of the torture.
As soon as saw the cover and read the blurb I knew I had to read this book! The cover is absolutely beautiful!
Here's the blurb
My name is Evelyn.
I met Devon and instantly fell for him.
Weeks later he fell for my best friend.
Never one to make waves, I watched as they started a life together. I stood by as their family grew, was the maid of honor at their wedding and the godmother to their children. All the while, I was longing for him, watching as he became the perfect husband and father. I was never jealous. I wasn’t even angry that my best friend had the only person I wanted. I had simply resigned myself to living without his love, but still being a part of his life.
Then, one terrible day, my best friend died.
She died and we all struggled to live life without her. Slowly, as the pain eased, our eyes opened and Devon finally saw me.
This is a story about second chances and second choices.
This is the story of how my life changed in the absence of Olivia.
As soon as Evie met Devon.. you could feel the sparks between them coming off of the pages. The Absence of Olivia kept me on the edge of my seat the whole book. It is a very angsty read which I love. You can feel the emotions.
Imagine falling for someone only to find out they are together with your best friend? She's your best friend. You aren't going to say a word about how you feel about him because she's your best friend. That is the predicament that Evie is in.
She watches Devon & Olivia fall in love and have two kids.. all the while suppressing her feelings.. Even though Evie never tells Olivia how she feels about Devon.. Evie & Devon know there's a pull between each other. They've known since the day he gave her his shirt.
"His words had so much power: the power to save me, the power to kill me, the power to render me completely broken, unable to put myself back together."
Everything changes when Olivia passes away and asks Evie to take care of her family. So she does what she promises. Which I think only makes it harder on both her & Devon.
After fluke encounter with the handy man and a pretty amazing date.. it didn't go how I thought it would.
I love this quote! I can completely agree with Evie and not wanting anyone to touch her camera!
"You want me to trust you with my camera? No one holds my camera." I didn't care if we were on a date or not, I wasn't about to hand him my camera. He could have been the second coming of Christ; he wasn't going to carry my camera."
I'm super glad how this book turned out. It wasn't the HEA I thought it would be. The author really takes you on an emotional rollercoaster!
The Absence of Olivia might be one of my top books of 2015!
Anie Michaels is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors! I'm so glad I found her books!
