Dylan Morgan has it all a loving family, a great career as a Detective for the Charleston, South Carolina Police Department and as many woman as he wants. Many would say what he is missing is the love of a good woman, but he would say that he is not. The only thing he is missing is the satisfaction of keeping all the criminals off the street. To keep them from continuing to harm more good people. And from the day that he meets Nurse Claire Stuart for the first time after stops a potential crime from happening, everything changes for him. Dylan just doesn’t know if it is for the best. And when the criminal that Dylan stopped has his eyes trained on Claire will he be able to protect her?
Nurse, Claire Stuart never had an easy start in life. She has worked hard for everything that she has to make it to where she is today. She has chosen to never be like her family, to never put herself in situations to be like her mother or sister. There for when she meets Detective Dylan Morgan, she wants nothing to do with him on a personal level. She must maintain a professional work ethic with him and since she knows his reputation that will not be hard for her to do. But as time goes on and Claire starts to see more of Dylan will she be able to keep her feelings strictly professional or will she begin to fall for the handsome Detective?
Until I'd read this book, Cayce Poponea was not even on my radar. But I'm so glad this was my introduction to her writing. Absolute Power brings together Dylan Morgan a hardened detective that's worked his way up the ladder to this rank and Claire Stuart an ER Nurse that comes from the VERY backwoods of Kentucky. And like Dylan she was worked very hard to become the woman she is with no help from her family.
"I was living proof we could all choose whatever future we desired and how we wanted to spend the time we had here on Earth."
As I began this book, it was reading a little slow for me and I was worried that I wasn't going to be able to finish it. The characters just weren't "doing it" for me. There's Dylan who really is the epitome of a man whore that has slept with at least half of the nursing staff at University Hospital. And I use the word "slept" very liberally. There's no sleeping involved, it's pure straight f***ing and it's not even the conventional kind of f***ing. Our Hero is only out for pure sexual release. And any woman that thinks she's getting more from him.... well, they're in for a surprise.
On the converse, Claire is very limited in her sexual encounters and she's somewhat innocent which is one of the things I liked most about her. Given how she was raised, she could have become someone completely different but she had the where with all to see beyond the type of woman her mother is. As she witnesses the interaction between Dylan and one of the nurses, Claire thinks to herself...
"Having enough of Shayla's flirting and not wanting to witness the next step in her attempt to corral yet another victim into her vagina web...."
Not only did I laugh out loud reading that line, I actually think I snorted too!
These two come together when Dylan interrupts a crime taking place bringing the victim, Lainie and the attacker into the hospital on a night when Claire is working. The compassion and concern Claire showed Lainie was so touching and made me feel like I was the one receiving her ministrations. This is of course is due to the beauty of Ms. Poponea's words. There's an attraction between these two, but Claire wants nothing to do with Dylan given his extracurricular activities and Dylan knows he can't be the kind of man Claire deserves....or can he?
"When she physically touched me, something bizarre happened. My chest changed from the burning, bubbling sensation to complete calm."
Through a series of events, some heartbreak and some rather tense moments Dylan comes to the conclusion that he can't be in law enforcement anymore because he's sick and tired of the way the system works and not to the benefit of the victims no matter how hard he tries. One rainy night, our H/h come together when Claire needs some help and Dylan wants to put into action his plan to get "the girl" who in this case is the beautiful Claire. When this happens we get to see the Southern gentleman that Dylan was raised to be my his Momma and let me tell you, chivalry is NOT dead! Watching this unfold caused an overwhelming sense of joy as I knew these two would be perfect for each other. He could be the man she deserves and she could calm him and give him confidence that he's better than what he thought he was and she shows this to him time and again....
"I chose to wrap my arms around him, say nothing, and hug the $hit out of him. Holding on to the man he was trying so hard to become, one who would mess up, forget things and make me cry. Right now, he was the man I needed him to be, faithful and honest."
As they dance around each other, Dylan thinks Claire knows how he feels, but that's not necessarily true and there's so many people giving each of them advice and poking their noses into how their relationship is progressing, that on more than one occasion I rolled my eyes at the absurdity of the situations, but I also chuckled as well. These Southerners, they don't hold anything back, the beauty of it though is that they say it with such gentility that you're not sure if you're being insulted or not! There are moments when our H must protect not only Claire, but her best friend Lainie and make some decisions that could put an end to any type of future these two want with each other. When they finally progress to a physical relationship, it was written with such grace, but was so hot and steamy that I had to make sure no one was around me reading over my shoulders.
When it comes time to talk about their feelings, Claire tells it straight to Dylan and she won't take anything less than this...
"I have requirements rules which I won't bend or break for anyone.....I want to be adored, Dylan. I want to be the first thing you think about and the last as you close your eyes to sleep....But most of all, I want a passion that burns hot in my belly."
Can Dylan give her what she needs? Are Claire and Lainie safe from the scumbag that attacked Lainie that dark night? What role does that man play in Dylan and his brother's past? What does Dylan decide to do that could be detrimental to his future with Claire? How are his brothers involved?
While I thought this was going to be a book that I was going to struggle to finish, I'm very happy to say, I was sad to see it end and I'm clamoring for the answers to my questions, because there's so much more story to be found out and I for one can't wait to read Absolute Corruption!
