Now, finally, it seems that the Dennis Coffey Sussex material of the early and mid seventies are officially re-issued - with this Best Of Silver CD and the original albums as CD-Rs available through Amazon.
"Scorpio", this funky instrumental track with strange aggressive sounding guitars quite unexpectedly jumped up the charts at the end of 1971, followed by "Taurus" and "Getting It On". Here we get them again in very good sound quality - plus several tracks from Coffey's Sussex albums. On closer examination (the tracks don't come chronologically) this compilation contains all the tracks from his album "Evolution", and that is what I was waiting for. Simply program you player with Tracks 12, 13, 14, 4. 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 an you will listen to "Evolution" in its entirety, or - to be honest - not quite, as "Getting It On" and "Big City Funk" come as unedited versions and Scorpio's stereo channels have been swapped (at least compared to my UK-A&M original vinyl album and the Scorpio single release), but I think those of us who think that "Evolution" is a truly great timeless guitar album, will tolerate that.
This is a highly recommended release.
Drop by my website @ "JudeMac Forever" sometime & look around. Always something there for everyone.
Let me give you a triad of REALLY good reasons why you want to buy this one, and totally avoid the 2007 disc.
1.) The 2007 CD was compiled by a European outfit who did not get permission to distribute it. They do not pay Dennis Coffey any royalties, but legally pursuing the party who issued it is too expensive. I confirmed this with Mr. Coffey himself.
2.) The audio on the 2007 is terrible. There is virtually no high-end frequency whatsoever, it sounds like a heavy blanket has been placed over the speakers. However, the worst part is:
3.) The pitch of most or all of the songs on the 2007 CD is incorrect; all the tracks are sped-up faster than the original tracks on vinyl.
If you want to get the best-sounding CD of CF's solo work, PLUS get all the tracks in their correct pitch, avoid a complete rip-off (of both you & Mr. Coffey) and buy THIS disc.
