Editorial Reviews

The first "best-of" for one of the go-to guitarists in Detroit soul! His strings graced many landmark Motown records and his own fine albums; samplers have had a field day with some of these: his 1971 R&B Top 10 Scorpio and 1972 hit Ride, Sally, Ride plus Wind Song; Chicano; Can You Feel It; Getting It On; Outrageous; Big City Funk 20 in all.

Whether you realize it or now, you HAVE heard "Scorpio" somewhere in your past. It's been featured in movie soundtracks, compilations, and even got some radio play when it was a single back in the 70s. But that famous tune is only the tip of a very funky iceberg when it comes to the music the Dennis Coffey recorded during his career --- which still continues. He was a guitar maestro for hire and played on many records by other artists over the decades, but the stuff he recorded as a solo artist has been woefully ignored for far too long. This compilation is an excellent overview of his guitar genius. Sizzling slabs of funky instrumentals; juicy tunes with meat on the bones. Ignore the scary cover; this is GREAT funk music with LOTS of rhythm and soul.

When in 2007 a rather dubious Best Of CD by one of the great funk guitarists appeared, I was rather dissappointed with the overall sound quality (see my review).
Now, finally, it seems that the Dennis Coffey Sussex material of the early and mid seventies are officially re-issued - with this Best Of Silver CD and the original albums as CD-Rs available through Amazon.
"Scorpio", this funky instrumental track with strange aggressive sounding guitars quite unexpectedly jumped up the charts at the end of 1971, followed by "Taurus" and "Getting It On". Here we get them again in very good sound quality - plus several tracks from Coffey's Sussex albums. On closer examination (the tracks don't come chronologically) this compilation contains all the tracks from his album "Evolution", and that is what I was waiting for. Simply program you player with Tracks 12, 13, 14, 4. 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 an you will listen to "Evolution" in its entirety, or - to be honest - not quite, as "Getting It On" and "Big City Funk" come as unedited versions and Scorpio's stereo channels have been swapped (at least compared to my UK-A&M original vinyl album and the Scorpio single release), but I think those of us who think that "Evolution" is a truly great timeless guitar album, will tolerate that.
This is a highly recommended release.

Funk music, you would think a guy out of Detroit would know this like the back of his hand & Dennis does! This is one great instrumental album featuring a few singles released statewide "Taurus" & "Scorpio" and others not so well known. I still have those 45's of the mentioned tracks and glad I picked this one up. This is a must have for anyone that appreciates great funk & some excellent instrumentation throughout the album his best tracks. Other then what has been said already, if you want to get one funk album and check it out, this is the one to listen to & you'll love it. Highly recommended, what are you waiting for? Get it.
Drop by my website @ "JudeMac Forever" sometime & look around. Always something there for everyone.

This may be the greatest funk CD off all time, and I don't say that lightly. There's never been a funkier guitarist than Dennis Coffey. He was also a mad scientist in the studio. This collection of 20 funk guitar instrumentals assembles all of his best solo material from over the course of his career. There isn't a weak track on the entire disc. This is an absolute essential for anyone interested in great guitar work. Do yourself a huge favor and buy this CD. It will instantly earn a permanent place in your rotation. There's nothing else quite like it!

If you're looking for a 70's Dennis Coffey compilation, you may be considering this 2011-released compilation, or the 2007 Big City Funk: Original Old School Breaks & Heavy Guitar Soul CD.

Let me give you a triad of REALLY good reasons why you want to buy this one, and totally avoid the 2007 disc.

1.) The 2007 CD was compiled by a European outfit who did not get permission to distribute it. They do not pay Dennis Coffey any royalties, but legally pursuing the party who issued it is too expensive. I confirmed this with Mr. Coffey himself.

2.) The audio on the 2007 is terrible. There is virtually no high-end frequency whatsoever, it sounds like a heavy blanket has been placed over the speakers. However, the worst part is:

3.) The pitch of most or all of the songs on the 2007 CD is incorrect; all the tracks are sped-up faster than the original tracks on vinyl.

If you want to get the best-sounding CD of CF's solo work, PLUS get all the tracks in their correct pitch, avoid a complete rip-off (of both you & Mr. Coffey) and buy THIS disc.

Dennis Coffey has been enjoying a career resurgence lately, and this collection of the best of his Sussex label recordings (both solo and with The Detroit Guitar Band) is an excellent introduction as to the reason why; including the entirety of the first album (Evolution) and selected tracks from the other three (Goin' For Myself, Electric Coffey and Instant Coffey). I give it five stars only because Amazon won't let me give it ten... it's that good! As I said in the title, thank you Varese Sarabande for this one!

There was only one LP by Dennis Coffey I really cared for, which today is sadly...out of print. I had a mind to dispose of this one after purchase but found a setting on my receiver that makes it come alive. So, that said, I would like to say that I am glad I changed settings and kept this " bad- ass" cd. Also if out of touch for awhile with Dennis, a very worthwhile more recent recording is available by him on "strut" records out of Germany. Since it is a self- titled cd, which is kinda like putting your musical signature on a legacy for the ages, that should give you an indication of its quality. Well worth looking into altho it is unlike either his period encompassed on this compilation and unlike his disco Funk period on Westbound label. He deserves more recognition than what he's received in the past as a fine guitarist.
