Abuela's Letter Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

Abuela’s Letter is a beautiful story that addresses loss and grief within a Latin family where a young girl is challenged by the death of her grandmother and discovers letter-writing as a way to cope and connect with her loved one's passing.

NCTE Charlotte Huck Award® for Outstanding Fiction for Children

Alma’s favorite days are when her big family gathers at Abuela’s house. Tíos take siestas while tías tell their stories, and primos play dominoes while Abuela stirs the frijoles. Always at the center is the love of Abuela! Alma’s beloved grandmother and her number one fan! When Abuela dies, all of this is suddenly gone. Alma is filled with sadness and grief, until she finds a letter that Abuela left for her.

Could Abuela’s words be what fills her heart again with love and sweet memories?

This thoughtful story captures the concept of “familismo” beautifully ― a Latin cultural value that involves dedication, commitment, and loyalty to family. Regularly spending time with one's immediate and extended family is part of familismo, as well as seeking the family's advice and support for important decisions and life transitions, such grief and loss. Includes a note to readers in English and Spanish with coping strategies essential to Latino and Hispanic families about grief and loss of a loved one, as well as additional ways to support children and honor the life and memory of beloved family members.

When I read Abuela’s Letter I didn’t expect to be affected so personally, but that is exactly what happened. After losing three family members in eighteen months, my grieving heart NEEDED this book. It beautifully and tenderly tells the story of a young girl who is grieving the loss of her abuela. It’s a genuine and authentic portrayal of grief that hits all the right notes. I felt seen and heard. This book brought me so much comfort, and I have no doubt it will do the same for others. It’s the perfect book for children who are experiencing a loss, but I also think it’s a book all children should read. In addition to telling a touching story about love and loss, there is a Reader’s Note in the back written by a psychologist that provides extensive information on the grieving process, as well as suggested activities and steps you can take to help a child through it. This is one of those books that should be in every home and library.

A heartwarming intergenerational story about family, tradition, and grief, this book approaches a difficult topic from the beautiful perspective that even when a loved one dies, their love lives on in our hearts. This is a must-read for anyone who has experienced loss.

Beautiful picture book about family, loss, grief -- and the discovery that those we love and miss can still be with us in our heart. The story, with its warm and charming illustrations of family life, is perfect for kids experiencing loss, and the reader's note in the back is perfect for adults trying to support those kids.

A bright and beautiful book about a little girl, Alma, who loses her beloved grandmother and eventually learns that, no matter what, her grandmother’s love will always be in her heart. Weaving in Spanish dialogue and some traditions from the author’s Mexican culture, the story shows the importance of family support after losing a loved one and models how this child navigates moving on after her devastating loss. The back matter offers an extensive note from a clinical psychologist explaining how caregivers and parents can best support their children in their time of grief.

Very sweet book about the love between a child and her abuela. Children in multicultural and multi generational households will related to the illustrations and story about what happens when a beloved family member passes and how family can support each other and keep memories alive. A helpful book for dealing with grief.

This is beautiful book with a great message for young children. Death and grief are hard for anyone to deal with, but especially children. This book is such a great way to show children that their deceased family member will always be there in spirit. I got a little emotional thinking about how I used to write letters with my grandma. It brought back great memories. I liked the inclusion of the grief letter at the end of the book.
