Decent, Cheap, Lighted Kindle Touch Case

Decent, Cheap, Lighted Kindle Touch Case
This is a decent case for Kindlers who need a light. If you don't plan on using the light (which operates on two lithium coin cells), I recommend looking for a different case. The reason is that the light folds behind the case and prevents it from laying flat on surfaces and increases the space it takes up in a backpack, purse, or carry-on bag. That said, the light works quite well. It illuminates the screen evenly and is easy enough to store. It folds over the screen and is held in place by a leather clasp which hopefully stands the test of time. The Kindle Touch is a very tight squeeze into the case. So tight, in fact, that I was worried about damaging the power button when inserting. I would not recommend this case if you plan on removing and inserting the Kindle Touch often. The construction quality exceeded my expectations. For the price (I got $4 off by Googling around a little and using Amazon checkout, and I encourage you too as well), the material and stitching is very nice, albeit a little aromatic (like a new Chinese car). The front flap is secured by a magnetic latching system which virtually undetectable and quite elegant. The inner suede appears quite nice. This case is not perfect. While I believe it will protect the Kindle from most accidents, I can imagine many others that could likely damage the device. For instance, the bottom edge and right corner are flush with the leather. If it was dropped on a hard surface it would not fare well. Of course, it would be better than no case at all. All in all, I really like this case and almost gave it 5 stars. The tight fit and protruding light prevent me from loving it. You cannot find a better deal for a lighted case for a Kindle Touch at the moment. I recommend this one.

Received this cover today and I am very happy with it. The light works well, it holds the Kindle securely, the cover closes easily, magnetic strip holds pretty strong to keep it closed, quality is decent. Some people complained about the light protruding on the back. It's a lighted case - with the light attached - I'm not sure where they expected the light to be. Yes, the light protrudes on the back when you are not using it, but it's certainly not a deal breaker. Some covers cost four times as much as this one. Considering that, especially, it's a great cover. I'd buy again.

I have had the Amazon lighted case on my wish list for sometime now, but was hesitant to purchase because of the price. I had the original Kindle, which came with a case..and even though my new 79 dollar Kindle, with the case at 59, didn't add up to what I paid for the original, the reviews clearly seemed to state the Amazon case for the new Kindle was rather flimsy, and kind of cardboard like. So, I ordered a sleeve, which is great for protection, but the clip on lights I have used at night slide around on the Kindle.

I came across the Acase cover, with a built in light recently, ordered it, and love it. It has a soft outside, and even though it doesn't lie flat on its back due to the light's holding pouch (reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5), I love the case. There are no issues with the buttons (some reviewers claim the Amazon case causes issues with turning the pages/buttons), and it is a nice fit overall.

The light goes over the top, once released from its pouch, and is held in place by a small leather clip. I am looking forward to reading at night, without disturbing my husband.

I figured the other reviewer who broke the switch was just too rough on it. Well, I was careful and still broke the switch the FIRST TIME I MOVED IT. Not wanting to return it since I needed it for my daughter's birthday in a few days and seeing the screws were easily accessible, I took it apart. The LED is just floating there, soldered to a resistor and the switch. It would actually make it easy to replace any of the three parts if necessary. Luckily it wasn't really a "break". The switch just sits in a contained area and moves around so the plastic extension falls off of it easily. I reattached the plastic extension to the switch and added a little hot glue, and then hot glued the switch into place and reassembled. Now it feels nice and tight. And in case there was any doubt, this does have a sticker on it that says made in China.

The cover itself feels very nice. I like the feel of it and the fact that there is a magnetic clasp to hold it closed. If you fold the cover around back, it's as thick as a 200 page book because of the bulge from the light tucked into the back. Depending on your preferences you may like or hate that. But you can set the book down that way and it seems to stay flat. It comes with a wrist strap that attaches to the top of it. You can see it in some of the pictures but it isn't obvious. It's a little small for my average adult sized wrists but may be perfect for kids. For use it would have been nice to have the wrist strap attach to the bottom instead.

When I first got it I had a couple of difficulties. I thought that the light wasn't working at all. You have to take the batteries out because it ships with a piece of plastic preventing them from making contact. Second is that there is a flap on the inside that tucks under the shipping foam, so pull that out from under the foam and then it should be obvious how to slide the foam out and the kindle in. I had just pulled the foam out from the front and then couldn't figure out how to squeeze the kindle into the stitched in holders until I noticed the flap. I do like that it is on the inside and tucks in rather than at the top or bottom, the kindle will not come loose from that.

Light coverage appears very good and I'm not seeing any flicker. But I haven't had this for long so I'll update it if anything changes.

[UPDATE: I originally gave this case a very positive review (see below). However, after using it for two months, I took out my Kindle and noticed that the leather piece that goes under the Kindle and holds it in place had STAINED the backside of the Kindle black. This is unacceptable and certainly the result of cheap materials and coloring used in assembly. I have no choice but to revise my initially positive review and give the item a one-star warning.]

Some of the negative reviews for this case are written by Kindle Touch owners who found that it doesn't fit their reader (and justifiably so; the listing says it will work on both units). However, Kindle Touch and Kindle 4 w/5-way controller are slightly different in size, and this case was obviously made to fit the latter.

So if you have a Kindle 4, rest assured that this case fits and protects beautifully. It's made from solid material with a nice surface and has a reliable magnetic closure. It also has a terrific, bright LED lamp (powered by two lithium ion 2032 3V batteries, which cost around $1-5 each to replace) holstered on the case's backside with a strip of leather and a snap-button. I have two minor quibbles with the light: 1. I wish it were wider so as to cover even more of the screen, although it does a terrific job as is; 2. The holster part makes it bulky to store and to hold when you fold the front cover back.

Two other very, very minor complaints with the case in general: There is no natural "grippable" position or surface for holding the Kindle while in the case, although this is a complaint shared by many non-cloth/non-nylon cases. Also, I wish there was a latch or elastic band to hold the front cover when folded over, but that's perhaps asking too much.

The case does pretty much all you want: It's sturdy, a good fit, and provides a great all-in-one solution for storage and lighting. Best of all, it's only $20! The most comparable, "top of the line" case is Amazon's own premium case with built-in light, which costs a whopping three times more. You could also add a clip-on light to another leather case, but that's both a more expensive option and lacks the built-on storage for the light. Not worth it. This Kindle case is all you need.
