Though the characters are the heart of “Abiassa’s Fire”, it’s hard to really say that one aspect carries this series. Each piece fits together perfectly and complement one another. The environment helps to develop the characters, but the characters have learned to harness the environment. The story is woven in between these components and brings everything together. It’s a delicate blend that brings balance to the story and keeps the fantasy element from spiraling out of control.
One issue I often find in fantasy in unwieldy descriptions or over immersion. “Accelerant” has a great balance between world building and pacing. It is very easy to visualize Primar—to feel the chill of the mountains and the salty ocean breeze. However, Ronie does a great job of efficiently describing areas and scenes without saturating the reading in unnecessary details. Additionally, she keeps the pace moving without making the reader feel rushed. This book has a wonderfully natural feel, which deepens my love for this story.
In most books, I have little patience with self-pitying characters. In truth, this quality is one of my least favorite in a character as it can often overshadow other redeeming personality traits. But Ronie manages to keep Haegan from becoming ‘that’ annoying character by bringing realistic struggles into his life. Most readers will be able to understand his self-doubt and his stubbornness in submitting to God’s plan for his life. Throughout this book, there are many subtle tie-ins between Haegan’s relationship with Abiassa and our relationship with God.
While Haegan is the main character, he’s upstaged a little by Tilli and Asalan. I developed an unhealthy attachment to Tilli and wanted to follow his story almost as much as Haegan’s. But I was torn a bit because I couldn’t wait to get back to Asalan’s story either. These three storylines are fantastic and I cannot wait to find out what happens in each of these character’s lives.
I truly love the “Abiassa’s Fire” series. From the gorgeous cover to the cliff hanger ending, I enjoyed every page of “Accelerant”. I was not at all ready for it to end and could easily have kept reading for another 200 pages. Ronie Kendig has crafted a beautiful world with amazing characters and a story that is completely enthralling. Though I’ll be sad to see this series end next year, I can hardly wait to have that final book in my hands!
This was even better than the first book, which, you really do want to read first. It was absolutely amazing. This series is a must read!
