If you want to connect a MacBook Retina to a Sieki 4K Monitor, you'll need this part. I had tried several ways of connecting (other adapters, software, you name it) and only managed to get a 15Hz refresh rate - which is pretty annoying in active use. Connecting this adapter gives you an immediate option of 4K @ 30Hz, and works perfectly right out of the box. Can't be happier.

Since the mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI active adapter was out of stock and I needed to get my 4k monitor running on a Mac Mini 5.2, I decided to use the full-size adapter with a separate mini DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort adapter in series. This works as advertised and allows full HDMI 1.4 bandwidth (3840x2160@30Hz).

I bought a 4K Seiki UHD TV from Sears for my Laptop (an older 17" MacBook Pro running Mavericks) not knowing if I could get full resolution with that setup. Plugged in this adapter and like magic, the 55 inch display became a great 4K monitor for that laptop. This is great for reviewing MRI scans, CT scans, and X-rays with my patients. Highly recommended.

Bought this to connect my Microsoft Surface Pro 2 computer to my Seiki 50" Ultra HD 4K 2160p TV that I use as a monitor. Works fantastically! Microsoft's similar product specifically made for the Surface Pro 2 failed miserably and I was worried that this one couldn't handle it either but instead came through without a hitch. A must have to connect your 4K display to your compatible notebook or tablet.

Is your Mac supposed to support 4K but doesn't? Same. Here's what you need to know.

Some 4K monitors may work with your Mac, but others may not. In OSX, there's a hard-coded pixel clock limit of 165 MHz, but the Seiki firmware runs at 297 MHz. Find out what your 4K monitor runs at; you can search the internet for "mac 165 pixel clock limit" to learn more.

Hence, the Seiki did not work for my Late 2014 Mac Mini as I had hoped. But using this activate adapter worked perfectly!

After connecting your 4K monitor, it may be necessary to reset NVRAM. Just shut down, then hold Option+Cmd+P+R during startup, after you hear the startup chime the SECOND time, immediately release the keys. Go to System Preferences > Displays and select the lowest refresh rate. After the screen comes back, you should see some 4K resolution options to select, including 3840x2160. Select it, then set your refresh rate to 30 Hz which is the highest supported one for 4K on a Mac right now.

Are your fonts jagged? I had to turn the "Sharpness" setting to 0 for my Seiki. This made all the difference, and everything is perfect now.

This worked fine on both a new Macbook Air running Mavericks and a 17" Macbook Pro (8,3) running Snow Leopard.
I used SwitchResX on the 17" and created a profile that ran at 17 Hz. Couldn't run it higher.
The Macbook Air got to 30 or 60 Hz, can't remember which, without any SwitchResX additions.
Tried straight Thunderbolt/MiniDisplayPort to HDMI cables on the Pro and none of them worked, including Apples expensive dongle kind.
