Another thing I have noticed is that some channel can play fine one day and then all of the sudden you turn to it and the screen will turn green and it will cut off and then turn back on. The only things I like about it is the "add- on scan" so that you don't have to do a full scan which would delete channels already saved. The add on does a separate scan to keep the ones you already had in..
When you turn off the box and the light is a dim red light instead of a bright red then it won't come back on unless you unplug it first. Also the cords will burn out sometime and box will be ok. I had two others of this brand , but they were a different model than this one,. One wouldn't turn on and I thought it was the box, but I switched the cord from the other one and it worked.
EDIT : The Converter stopped picking up any channels a few days ago. I had it for a year and six months. About six months ago it dropped one channel that I watched regularly . Then a few months ago it dropped a few more. I thought it was the antenna at first so I switch it , I tried new coaxial cables and unplugging the box for several minutes . last week it would only a few channels but the rest came in days later. Now it won't pick up any.
Powering up is a little slow. The speed of changing channels is decent.
The picture quality is good but if it is set on zoom (4x3), you can't see the far outer edges of the picture unlike my other converter boxes. The sound levels are low but at the highest setting matches close to that of my Magnavox converter. Please use the RCA connection and not the coaxial or you won't get the full sound level and will also hear a hiss (as many other reviewers have stated).
The reception is ok. It is better than my RCA but not as good as my Magnavox and Zenith.
I didn't have the issue where the channel settings were lost after turning the box off (standby mode). I've read on one review elsewhere that if you get the version with the rectangular power supply as opposed to the square one, you may have the later version that corrected this (mine has a 03/09 manufacture date).
The box does get a little hot but not so much that I can't touch it (I've had it on for a couple of hours). Seems hotter than my other brands. The Access HD has plently of vent holes top, side, and bottom. My Magnavox has only a tiny vent in the back and hardly heats up.
As for the remote, I got the 1080D version (dedicated remote). I bought a two pack Philips universal remotes (one big and one smaller) and successfully programmed both to work with the Access HD box. The bigger Philips universal can do everything the original remote can do except switching the audio and the signal strength meter. The smaller Philips lacks those in addition to the aspect (4x3 vs the station's setting) button. I've read in some reviews that the remote stopped working. At least I will be able to use the universals minus the few features if this happens.
It isn't a full featured box but if you just want to keep using a old NTSC TV, it is a good converter.
The thing finally started to sync to the Television without constant power off and on or having to power the Converter on and count down 12 seconds before powering on television. It remains powered on after powering off the televsion. The only change I've made was to turn off a timer set to 5 hours for the converter, perhaps this was the issue from the beginning, however the box would immediately power off when I turned the televisiion off. No reference to this within the instruction manual. I've decided to keep it for the spare bedroom as it only cost a total of thirty dollars including tax and shipping. Maybe I got one the later models slightly better batch because I didn't expereience the overheating issue mentioned by others or the having to reprogram it each time. Hopefully this helps someone else who may be experiences the same issue.
October 26 FOLLOW UP Review
Okay it's been about a week. The one problem I have is how to sync the two devices. Though my channels remained programmed, when I power off the television, the Converter goes into (hibernation?) signal LED goes from green to red, when I power the television back on nothing but static, no picture for minutes after powering on. Did I miss a programming step? Is this just inherent to this particular Converter?
I've sent an email to the Seller hopefully can get some insight.
