THE FIRST OFFICIAL AMERICAN RELEASE RESTORED IN 4K WITH NEW SPECIAL FEATURES
Before THE DAY OF THE BEAST, PERDITA DURANGO and the HBO series 30 COINS, writer/director Álex de la Iglesia made his smash debut with this "delightfully tasteless" (A Wasted Life) and "ridiculously aggressive" (Reel Rundown) "crazy genius sci-fi classic you've probably never seen" (A Taste of Cinema): In a dystopian future ruled by the wealthy and attractive, a deformed and disabled terrorist organization known as 'Mutant Action' will kidnap an heiress, flee to a desolate mining planet and trigger an intergalactic bloodbath of berserk vengeance. Antonio Resines (CELL 211), Álex Angulo (DYING OF LAUGHTER), Ramón Barea (800 BULLETS) and Santiago Segura (THE LAST CIRCUS) co-star in this "worldwide cult classic" (Dread Central) co-produced by Agustín & Pedro Almodóvar and winner of three Goya Awards, now scanned in 4K from the original negative.

Review
Outrageous... A bizarre melding of superheroes and freakshow gore. Let it never be said that Álex de la Iglesia is lacking an artistic vision. --Austin Chronicle
Álex de la Iglesia's rip-roaring start... A feverish blend of sci-fi, action and bizarro comedy that barely seems to stop to catch its breath. --Mondo Digital
Riotously entertaining... It mixes elements of science fiction, horror, black humor and ultra-violence, resulting in an eminently watchable slice of genre cinema.― --Rock! Shock! Pop!

was a great indie film.
Alotta great practical spfx ,gritty film . It's got subtitles but flows well so it doesn't really take away.
Good acting and story too I'd recommend it to any horror sci-fi bizarre cult film fan.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2003Well, this is one of my favorite Mexican films. I can't say that I've seen many Mexican films... in fact this may be the only one other than "El Mariachi" that I've ever seen, but that doesn't make this any less a great movie.
It's a difficult film to describe, much like "Delicatessen" or "Cemetary Man" is difficult to desribe. Basically, the plot revolves around this terrorist group, called "Accion Mutante!", composed of crazy people, all claiming to be mutants (not X-men type mutants, more like "your cousin joey that no-one talks about" type mutants"). They eventualy, and despite their own bungling, manage to kidnap a beautiful heiress, fly to another planet, and hold her for ransom. Throw in a few viscious, "Wild Bunch" style gunfights and massacres, cannibal alien hillbillies, and the obligatory love subplot, and you have a very entertaining film!
Overall, the feeling that you get watching the film is how HOT it must be - everything is always dusty, and all the actors are always covered in a sheen of sweat. The movie is very well directed and choreographed, especially the action sequences (the two main gunfights - one at a wedding and the end scene in an alien saloon especially). The actors are all pretty good, too - there isn't the amount of hamming that you often see in foreign films, or even in domestic genre films, for that matter.
It's been pretty hard to find in the US as anything other than a bootleg for a long time, so I was pretty glad to finally see it on DVD. The DVD isn't really anything spectacular, the transfer is pretty good, as is the sound. The English dubbed version is not very good - the actors doing the voiceovers sound very uninvolved, and there are plenty of times where you can almost SEE them reading their lines. The subtitles, however, are great, which is fine with me, as I prefer subtitles anyways. I would have liked more special features, too, especially some kind of commentary, but for now I'm just happy to have it on DVD at all. Happy watching!
