About the author

Andrea Tsurumi (they/them) is an author, illustrator and cartoonist originally from New York who now lives with their spouse and dog in Philadelphia. A gigantic text + image nerd, they studied sequential storytelling for an English BA at Harvard and an illustration MFA at the School of Visual Arts. While working in publishing for a several years, they threw themself into their two loves: indie comics and children’s books. Their first book, ACCIDENT! was an NPR Great Read and their second book, CRAB CAKE, won the Vermont Red Clover Book Award. Their book in the Elephant & Piggie Love Reading Series, I'M ON IT!, was a Kirkus Best of the Year 2021. Children's books they've illustrated include the KONDO & KEZUMI series, SHARKO & HIPPO, NOT YOUR NEST, and MR. WATSON'S CHICKENS. When they're not inventing croissant-based animals, they like reading about ordinary and ridiculous history.

This has been my go-to holiday gift for my friends with young kids. Honestly, the book could have no words and it would still be great to get. It's filled with incredible illustrations of all sorts of animals with incredible detail. You could spend hours pointing out anything from anteaters to narwhals.
Tsurumi's whimsical style makes each frame engaging both for adults and children alike. It's a children's book that you will enjoy reading as well... even if it's the 15th time that week. There's also a lot of great opportunity to ad-lib - if that's your thing - and tell the story in an animated way (pun intended).
As other reviewers have pointed out, the story itself is simple. In my experience, that's kinda a nice thing as it makes participation super easy. It won't take long for a young one to memorize most of the book, which makes it way more interactive.
Overall, I can't recommend this book enough - I've bought 3 or 4 copies for gifts by now. And if you don't believe me, you can check out all the awards it's winning. I just heard NPR name it as a Best Book of 2017
This book is heavy on illustration and light on reading. It's great for sparking discussion or giving the kiddos something fun to look through while they're in the car or keeping them busy while you're running errands or stuck in a waiting room.
The storyline is relatable and cute. The price tends to be higher than what I like to pay, but it was worth it.
