I loved Merrick - he was a rake but not egotistical, supported his many illegitimate siblings, vowed to be faithful after marriage before even selecting a wife. He was more human than the oft written unrealistic (but still entertaining) alpha male.
A rake has an undeserved reputation. A young woman is threatened by a cruel relative and/or depraved villain. There is a Problem that melts away once it has kept the lovers from their happy ending long enough.
Those same elements can be put together in ways that are charming or imaginative. That didn't happen here. The hero is a decent guy with nothing special about him to make him memorable. The heroine is bland.
The one out-of-the-ordinary aspect was the hero's unusual servants who all looked suspiciously similar and provided the only amusing moments.
Arabella and Merrick are both lovely characters with honor, humor and intelligence. The story mostly takes place in London with some time spent at Arabella's country estate. Secondary characters of Holland (Merrick's half-brother), Aunt Pen and their mutual friend all add interest to the story. The plot is a straight forward romance with a little intrigue around Arabella's brother-in-law and devising plans to save Arabella's reputation. There are several explicit scenes, which will be good or bad depending on the reader. Overall, a well written book with totally likable H/h that I enjoyed reading about.
I connected with both of the characters. I didn't just like them; I loved them. I enjoyed all the characters, even Aunt Pen. Ok, so I didn't enjoy the bad brother in law. You know where bad brother in laws go? Hell! Ok, just kidding.
What I loved about this book is the friendship that developed first. The way Merrick kept her safe and protected her, and truly cared for all his family made me love him even more, and the way Arabella was so accepting and sweet and kind made me love her all the more. They were perfect for each other.
