Some reviewers have mentioned that the sharpening blades quickly wear out, but I haven't had that problem. I think they may quickly wear if too much pressure is used when sharpening. Instead of bearing down, I use a number of smooth easy strokes and the little sharpening blades seem to be lasting a long time.
I've had a couple of sharpening steels and maybe just never got the hang of them. Also, I've read that they're really not designed to sharpen a knife, but more to maintain a properly-sharpened edge. Whatever.
This one does(!) sharpen a knife.
A word of caution: Don't use a lot of pressure when using it. Did I mention that I also suffer from not reading directions? They tell you to use light pressure, which I didn't the first few times. Use light pressure for five or six strokes, to get the blade to conform to the sharpeners, then five or six more light strokes to get a nice sharp knife.
Well, I can't say for the machete (it's buried somewhere in storage we think), but as for the knives, it was a huge help!
Now, depending on what your knives are made of, you'll get varied results. On some knives, it did okay, and on others, well... I just sliced off a piece of finger by accident trying to wash the blade of one I sharpened. Beware.. sometimes it works *REALLY* good. I would say that expensive steel sharpens better, but I have been really suprised at the performance of even my cheap knives coming back to life!
I used this on a pocket knife (the cutting offender), butcher knives, serrated steak knives, and a surprising sharpening experience: bread knives! They all got significantly sharper and easier to use with very little effort from this sharpener!
I tried to get a cheap pair of scissors to sharpen, but to no avail. I think you really need the one made for shears for it to work on scissors. Has to do with the angling of the blades there.
Overall? It sharpened every knife in my house thus far, and still has life in the original blades. It works quickly and easily for even the complete novice. With the additional blades in this kit, I think it was very well worth the purchase price. It's like getting all new knives for 14 dollars :) Highly recommend if you don't have the expertise or other equipment.
Note: Be prepared to have to wash the blades if necessary. Sometimes you get filings that occur from the sharpenings. The sharpener is totally washable too, which is a plus. Do half a dozen knives, and you'll see what I mean.
