I bought this as a cheap stop gap measure to get me by till I got a better laptop and never traded-up.
Buy This laptop.
As long as you set your expectations accordingly you'll be very happy with it. As stated, the screen isn't great, there's no backlit keyboard, and specs aren't blazing fast but that's not really something you can expect in a laptop under $500. What it does offer that a lot of others don't is USB 3.0 (most will have only 2.0), Intel Core i3 (most will have either Pentium D or AMD) or Intel WiDi. It's really impressive to find that in a laptop so cheap. To really improve the problem specs (screen namely, maybe hard drive speed/size) the laptop would likely have to cost double.
All in all, very pleased. Acer bloatware was minimal and easily removed too. I probably had it all cleaned off and installed with the software she'd need in under 2 hours.
If you think you'd like this laptop, then I suggest buying it. It has been more satisfying than I would have thought, and I have had less problems than years I've owned the computer. A fantastic device.
A little late, considering I've had this laptop all of high school and now at the end of my first year of college. I guess I was inspired during my search for another laptop, looking at everything from specs including graphics, processors, USB ports, weight, etc., etc. and seeing some very discouraging reviews scattered through the positive ones. It can make searching for a new laptop immensely frightening, and seeing some awful reviews for this computer (on which I'm typing this review), I felt I needed to vouch for this machine.
I've had this laptop for four and a half years now, and only now is it starting to slow down and have some occasional issues with performance. These mostly include slower processing (though it's a problem I only see if I've left the laptop on too long without rebooting at all) and, only in the last month or two, an inability to run League of Legends, which I should mention is after all a demanding game, especially considering this laptop lacks a dedicated graphics card.
The one thing that really inspired me to write this review, as far back as a year (though I hadn't gotten around to it) was when I was sitting at my laptop drinking a bottle of water, and I upended the bottle and spilled water literally across the entire keyboard. I mopped up most of it with paper towels, and even managed to get into the crevices, but it was no good. Shortly afterward the screen went black and refused to turn on even when I held the power button for some time.Read more ›
