Acer builds the 15.6 inch E1 platform (there is also a 14 inch version) with a wide variety of CPUs. This is the low end. Other versions feature a quad-core Pentium (another Bay Trail variant with four cores instead of two), a dual core i3, and a quad core i5. Each step up the processing ladder raises the price; the hardware otherwise remains pretty much the same. (For example, the E1-572-6870 includes a quad-core Haswell i5. As I write this, that version is nearly $200 more expensive.) Choose among them based on your budget and your need for speed, and watch for deals.
Everything works well enough; nothing stands out. The keyboard doesn't flex when you type and includes a numeric keypad. (But there is no separation between the main part of the keyboard and the number pad, which takes a bit of getting used to.) The trackpad is nothing special. The display is a 1366x768 TN panel. Connectivity is also typical: three USB ports (one of them USB 3.0), gigabit Ethernet, HDMI and VGA video out, headphone jack, and a SD card slot. (No microphone jack; that may disappoint some.) An above-average webcam for a budget laptop is included.Read more ›
The wi-fi software on here is well-reported as being far less than SUB-standard, so uploading or downloading is going to be slower than your grandmother off her arthritis meds. (That's slow, baby!) And that's assuming it even does it at all (likely not.)
On top of it, you have to stay on top of your registry cleanup and disk optimization... or else the laptop will crash. Mine did it about 24 days after I bought it. I had no idea it would do that, and I got a LOT of crap from my folks about that. Turns out this will be pretty common, as it's done this twice now since the first time in early May. So, to save you a bit of grief (and a service bill from a tech service call), here's how you can fix it ("fix" being a relative term with the Acer E1-510-2500)..
1) Turn off your laptop.
2) Wait 30 seconds.
3) Turn on your laptop and IMMEDIATELY tap the F11 key repeatedly for about 60 seconds.
4) After 60 seconds of tapping the F11 key, stop and it should boot normal.
This laptop is completely useless, and I hate saying this about any tech but this thing ain't even worth as target practice with a howitzer cannon. DO NOT GET THIS ONE. Hell, HP makes better crap.
