- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2014This is pretty much a cut and paste from my review of the Acer V5-473p-6459 which I bought for my son - I kept the 5602 for myself. The 6459 and 5602 are exactly the same laptop except that the 5602 has a1920x1080 IPS screen. I added 4GB of ram and an msata card to both laptops without any problems. The IPS screen on the 5602 is excellent.
Outstanding laptop under 650 bones once a 128GB msata card and another 4GB of ram are added (Microsoft has a good deal on this laptop).
Pros: I was looking for a 13.3-14 inch laptop, less than 4 lbs, touchscreen, at least an i5, sata drive, 8 GB ram, overall above average functionality for less than $700 and this laptop fit the bill (weighs in at just over 4 lbs). The build quality is quite excellent, and the fans are barely noticeable. Battery life has been better than 6 hours with moderate to heavy use. The touchscreen is responsive, and I have had no issues with it. The sound quality is also excellent for a laptop (although that ain't saying much). The backlit keyboard is a nice bonus. I was surprised at the small amount of bloatware loaded on the computer - I was expecting more.
I like having the 500GB hard drive for data storage - typical speed for a 5400 rpm hard drive. The i5 and the intel graphics will not wow any gamers. The bios is very vanilla. To add the msata card, extra ram, or to remove the battery requires the user to remove the entire back of the laptop - not a big deal, just be careful not to lose any of the dozen+ little screws. I was a Windows 8 skeptic, but since I have been using it a lot the last few months, it actually isn't bad. I still like Win 7 better, but 8.1 is certainly not Vista, and the touchscreen is probably more functional and useful with 8.1. I have not had any driver issues with 8.1.
As far as negatives, I had to play around with the touch pad settings to get it close to the way I like - and it still is little bothersome. The range of the wireless card is slightly below average under AC power and under battery power the default balanced setting reduces the range to below average. I changed the balanced setting under battery power for the wireless card to max performance which increased the range comparable to when under AC power.
All-in-all, this laptop has superior value with performance levels and quality well above much more expensive laptops.
EDIT: 3 Oct 2015. Bought another one of these and still loving it. The keyboard went bad on my son's 6459 (still under warranty). Acer did not have any backlit keyboards, so they replaced the entire laptop with the 5602 model. Now we have three of these bad boys. All have been updated to Windows 10 with no problems. By the way, I like Win 10 much more than 8 other than the auto updates and info being sent to MS.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2014Ordered from Acer outlet. Was very excited to get this notebook as per the reviews this had an exceptional hardware to price ratio. However when I received the item the unit itself had an appeal to it however my unit came very banged up. It looked like it had been used for over 2 years from someone in the construction field. I am trying to get a replacement unit or my money back. For 399 I would expect a laptop in far better condition than this.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2015This 14" laptop is loaded to handle all of your needs. I purchased a refurbished model. Our family owns 2 of these. The battery holds a charge for about 5 hours. The i5 processor works fast. The screen is awesome! It's very easy to upgrade the memory and add a solid state hard drive - search for videos on youtube. This laptop would have received 5 stars, but it came with a bad battery. I sent it back and it was fixed.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2015It appears from the reviews that this computer is an all or nothing proposition, but fortunately I got a winner (although I have only had it for a day). The FHD IPS touch screen is gorgeous and responsive, backlit keyboard is a BIG plus, excellent trackpad and charging system make me happy and set up was a breeze. This comes with basic Windows 8.1, and no added bloatware, which is a delight. The keyboard has a good feel to it, even with chicklet sty le keys. There are only three USB ports (two 2.0 and one 3.0), standard HDMI, Acer mini converter port, headphone/microphone port and LAN 10/100/1000. There is no optical drive, just an SD card reader. I have had no issues connecting or staying connected to WiFi. I will probably update the RAM eventually, but for now 4GB is fine. Performance is quick, the i5 processor is more than sufficient for a small laptop and the 5400 RPM HDD is really not too much of an impediment, although I am sure a SSD and more RAM would make this little beauty really take off. The msata slot will only accept a drive that is 7mm deep, so check dimensions before buying a drive.
I have coveted this computer since I first saw it at Micro Center last summer, when is was originally priced at $699 (now reduced to $599). When I found it on Amazon half a year later at three hundred dollars less, it was a no-brainer. As I wrote, I was a little concerned to see the reviews coming in at 50/50, but I seem so far to be one of the lucky ones, for which I am grateful. I have done a lot of shopping over the past six months, but kept coming back to this Acer, as it had all the features I wanted. So far, it seems to be a fantastic purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2015Was excited when I saw this laptop, very sleek, very light. Open the screen, powered it up, beautiful. Touch screen worked great. Connected to WiFi, ignored Microsoft registration, put it down for a second, when I turn back the screen is flashing color lines, rainbow fashion and then the computer shuts off.
Turn it back on, screen pitch black, no back light. Computer seems to work, the keyboard glows, screen dead. Initiated return process...
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2015Amazing machine...only flaw is caps lock on off light or indication is missing
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2015This is a great laptop for the price. However, do be sure to take advantage of the free windows 10 upgrade once you are able to as I encountered so many issues with windows 8.1 (this issue seems to be my ISP's fault upon further experience).
The screen, solid construction, and decent speed are amazing for what I paid. This is definitely not a laptop for games or photo editing as the video card seems weak but for general computing this is fantastic. I have a dedicated desktop and use this laptop primarily for taking notes during seminars and business classes so this fit my needs perfectly.
