For the price, I highly recommend this notebook PC. I was able to get it for under $500 from Amazon itself - the price seems to vary a lot depending on who you buy it from.
Update - very easy to update the RAM. One large panel on the bottom with two screws provides access to HD, RAM and wireless card. The system recognized the additional RAM immediately on restart, without my having to go into BIOS.
Pros: Very very fast; runs most 32 bit applications but not 32 bit drivers; nice screen; weight is acceptable; not to much bloatware; battery life good
Cons; Del key in a funny location near F12 key. I'd much rather have it on the top right. Volume is a bit on the low side, but crystal clear with nice tone for music. Glossy outside gets a bunch of fingerprints fast. Restoring a backup to C drive killed the battery pretty quickly, around an hour or so. In shadowy area, touchpad is invisible to surface.
That's it. The cons are mostly picky. It's a really good computer for the price. My wife will use it as a desktop mostly anyway with a keyboard and mouse externally. And a monitor.
Good job Acer. This is my first experience with an Acer and for the price I think they do a really good job.
My only issue with this computer is the build - in particular the power button. The button is located just above the keyboard (all the way to the left.) The problems is that the panel of the button is very thin and therefore very, very, very easy to press. If you accidentally slide your finger over it at any time, your computer will shut off. But that's not the worst of it. The power cable port is "conveniently" located directly parallel to the power button. So you may be thinking, why is this bad? Well... If, when plugging in the power cable, you jiggle the cable a little too much, you may accidentally hit the power button sensor... From the back! I can't tell you how many times I've lost work after plugging in my laptop. And because the computer is so fast, it turns off very quickly, making it nearly impossible to save your work before the inevitable.
All in all, a great computer for the price, but BEWARE of the power button.
I have had this computer for right about a year and it was ok, not the fastest computer every but it got the job done for research and paper writing.
About 3 months after i purchased the computer one of the USB 2.0 ports on the right side went out, after about 4 hours on the phone with tech support ( with 3 individuals that could not understand English, much less speak it!!!!!!!) it was determined that this was hardware failure and the entire motherboard would have to be replaced.
This troubleshooting process should have taken 20 minutes not four hours.
They told me that I would have to return the computer to them to have it repaired, ok no big deal. I did some research and found that their average return time for laptops was something like a month, and being a college student this is unacceptable due to the amount of papers i have to write.
I waited until a few days ago to send it off to be repaired, on preparation for shipping i cracked part of the bottom case of the laptop over the hinge, no big deal, just physical damage.Today i get a call from acer telling me that they can not repair the computer and that if i want it repaired it will be $250 to replace the bottom plastic piece of the computer because they "don't do partial repairs". REALLY!? They want over half the cost of a new computer to replace a plastic piece that has nothing to do with the original DEFECT of the computer. I am done with acer forever. The computer was a decent product but these people are horrible to deal with. DO NOT BUY FROM ACER
