I have always bought cheaper laptops, $200-$300 HP's. And I end up getting a new one every two years or so. I decided to step it up a little this time, and from the hours of research I did, this is where I ended up. So coming from those cheaper laptops, this thing is a dream, I mean it is the Ferrari of laptops. It's fast, and I mean instant kind of fast . The SSD (solid state drive) is what I understand makes it so fast. It's pretty, and clean, and feels and looks expensive. The biggest complaint I read about this laptop before I bought it was the screen... If there is a problem with this screen, I can't imagine what the people complaining are used to looking at... It's perfect, I mean I have a nice quality 1080hd TV hanging on my wall, and the picture on this laptop screen is every bit as good. You can view it from every angle also. I play a little Minecraft, I never knew how awesome it could look until I got this laptop, I downloaded a shader pack for it and ran it on the highest settings... Perfection.
Also, the keyboard IS BACKLIT, there seemed to be some confusion in the Q&A section on that but I assure you, it is backlit (see pictures). I never had that before, and I never realized how valuable it is. I will never have another laptop without backlit keyboard when I'm on it at night on the couch, it's amazing to have.
If you're not a computer person, and you're having a hard time making a decision like I was... Look no further, this thing is amazing.
**UPDATE: It's been about 5 months now and I would still highly recommend this laptop. It works as smooth and fast as the day I bought it, and now I have loaded with apps and programs. I am the person that has 20 windows at a time open and it never bogs down. Tech gains have slowed significantly in the last 10 years or so, making this laptop as relevant as it was 5 months ago when I bought it.
Just recently acquired the new E5-576G-5762 (8th gen i5 with Nvidia 150mx) and have to say that this laptop is extremely decent. Thanks to its SSD, it boots Windows 10 pretty fast, bloatware is kept to a minimum (please uninstall Norton before doing anything else. :p), and the machine is definitely zippy. Haven't added more RAM nor extra HDD but planning to do so (and update the "review" when I do). Battery life is touted at 12 hours and I pretty much doubt it will reach that milestone (unless you are using the screen at 30% or less maybe) but it does give you at least 6 to 7 hours using it for browsing, writing, etc. Oh, and the Nvidia card is plenty capable for gaming at medium settings at least (Grid Autosport FPS avg is in the 80s/90s or so)
+ Great and fast CPU and overall fast PC performance
+ Backlight KB and travel feels pretty nice on the keys.
+ Decent quantity of available ports
+ It has a DVD drive :o
+ Upgrade possibilities
+ Decent Full HD screen (might be the 'crappiest' thing on it and it is still good for the price)
- Trackpad is too finicky and not my favorite
- IT RUNS HOT!!!!!
That is the major con for me. Running GRID benchmark, it got to a high 92/93 degrees C!!! Same thing when running 3DMark :o
I think Intel CPUs limit is 100 C and it will probably start throttling to maintain a decent temperature. I guess we could probably undervolt (will look into that) or see if one of those rest 'things' with fans could help. (Do note that this is at room temp 60-something Fahrenheit. I live in the Caribbean were temps are usually 80+ so when I go back I need to retry the test and watch the temps.
Other than that, haven't found any major problems, but it's been only 3 days... Need to play with it a bit more. As of now, for $600 or less, this is a nice buy.
-SSD is M.2 SSD, https://www.amazon.com/256GB-based-solid-Hynix-HFS256G39TND-N210A/dp/B075R93L6S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1513958639&sr=8-1&keywords=hfs256g39tnd-n210a
-DVD-Ram drive - I personally still use these, in the DoD we are not authorized to use USB devices, so we do a lot on CD (old school). The DVD is HL-DT-ST GUE1N - https://www.amazon.com/HL-DT-ST-GUE1N-Internal-Tray-Loading-Optical/dp/B075XQ1DNZ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1513958855&sr=1-1&keywords=hl-dt-st+gue1n
NVIDEO MX150 discreet graphics card -- ensure you right click on the desktop, click on the Nvidea control panel, go to global settings, and replace "Auto Select" with the MX150. Also replace the PhysX with the discreet card. No point in using the U620 internal for anything.
It does run a bit hot under load (like most laptops) - however I don't think the fans are any worse than other laptops. It's fairly quiet in day to day use.
Bezels around screen are large -- not a big deal, just FYI.
Can't think of anything else major -- I see a lot of older reviews complaining about the wireless card and the display. I'm getting max bandwidth through wireless card, no issues. The display is a TN, so not as good viewing angles as IPS, however, I like that. More battery life and the person next to me on the plane is reading my computer from the side. It looks great straight on -- in face, I had to turn brightness down a bit. Nvidea also includes a night mode, so you can filter out the blue light
I was worried about the display being dull - but it's perfectly fine. Just my advice, log into the NVIDEA control panel (right click on desktop), and select the MX150 for global settings use. That forces the apps to use the MX150 vice the default U620. Also, the computer does run a little warm when pushed (like all laptops).
All in all, very happy with this purchase, have not had a single problem.
