Older review: (Tip: run memory manager and boost as soon as possible)
When the early Android tablets were out, especially all the cheap ones, they were all buggy. I've had a very early one and also recently had a Vizio Coplay (another android device) so I know what their biggest shortcomings are: MEMORY.
MUST DOWNLOAD MEMORY MANAGER! That 1 GB memory is too small for demanding apps like Flipboard or even a simple browser. The very first thing you must do is download a memory app like Memory Booster that can auto boost as often as possible because you will run out of memory. When that happens, the unit will slug or hang. Also, reduce the items to sync with your account. There is also a setting in settings that says to remove app from memory when you leave it- it helps.
The processing speed is just enough, but you will really feel the effects of low memory. If the Play store doesn't have an app, Amazon Appstore might have it or you can sideload apps which may or maynot work. You have to test each app to see if it works properly. Also, update the system immediately, that helped stability right away. I would also load a lighter launcher like Nova or Solo. If you want Flipboard to work better, set the cache as small as possible and reduce the number of panes. The Youtube app runs better and works well. You can sideload Adobe Flash to play flash games, animations.
The Chrome browser is very buggy, I use the stock browser and it is snappy. I haven't tested the monitor function yet, but this is a good standalone machine to do everyday things like listen to Songza, surf, Flipboard, Youtube. etc. You can't have multiple windows open when browsing but you can open multiple tabs.
I hope these tips can help you have a better experience. I really think it is a valid breakthrough product, but it is not as polished as an Apple product.
Additionally, I put the little USB gizmo that is shipped inside the mouse into my laptop so that I can use an external keyboard and mouse, which are more comfortable for long typing sessions. It took several minutes for the laptop to find the Windows drivers for the keyboard and mouse and download them, but it was worth the wait. It happens that I have an Acer laptop, so I can't for sure say that this will work with other brands of laptop, but my guess is that it will.
Obviously, any laptop you use has to have an HDMI port or you will need a USB-HDMI connector cable.
Getting a large monitor was my primary reason for buying the DA220HQL, and it suits that purpose perfectly. All the work is done and saved on the laptop, and when I meet with the authors I am doing the typing for, I simply unplug the HDMI cable and take it to the meeting.
It is a plus, for me, that I can also use the monitor as a giant Android tablet just by removing the HDMI cable from my laptop. I use it for things that don't require Windows-based software--like accessing the Internet for email, Facebook, and so on. I recently attended an online seminar about EndNote by downloading a webcasting app to the DA220HQL and watching/interacting with the presentation in its full big-screen glory.
I initially thought of replacing my laptop entirely by buying Sony's Tap21 (at far greater cost), and would not have found the DA220HQL if I hadn't been searching for "PC". However, I do agree with other reviewers who say this is not a PC and that categorization is misleading. Unfortunately, there is no other category that fits, because we associate "tablet" with something much smaller in size.
Perhaps "hybrid monitor" would be more apt, but that term is not commonly used. In fact, I might have just made it up!
