I am currently waiting for the correct monitors to be sent.
- Display really washed out. I spent a long time calibrating it with Mac's advanced display calibrator. It took a lot of tweaking, because the default settings it ships with look horrible. By default it shows blacks and whites just fine, but the grays in between are basically gone. After calibrating it, it displays gray, but the color saturation is very weak.
- If I adjust the brightness of contrast on the display itself, the calibration is all whacked again. Either grays disappear, or everything goes black or white.
- The stand which you have to assemble was missing some screws. So the vertical riser isn't attached firmly to the flat round base unless I find some fairly standard bolts.
- When I first turned it on, there was some horrible ghosting around the edges of text, just like somebody had turned the sharpness filter up way too high on a photograph. This mostly (but not entirely) went away after several hours. It's still a bit too stippled.
To be clear, I'm not a graphics snob. I'm really not that picky about the quality of my displays -- I'm a software developer, and I like lots of pixels more than anything else. But this was so bad before calibrating that normal text was painful to read. I hate the hassle of returning things, but this one might be going back.
Just got the monitor and am so far happy with it. A few things I noticed...
- I'm getting 1440p through DP
- I'm NOW getting 1440p through DVI-D, after replacing my DVI-D Single Link cable with a new Dual Link one: AmazonBasics DVI to DVI Cable - 9.8 Feet (3 Meters) (UPDATED)
- Haven't tried HDMI as my video card doesn't support it
- In the box was a power cord, 3.5mm audio male-to-male and 6-foot DP cable (wish it was a bit longer, will probably have to get a replacement)
- The stand was missing the piece that connects the base to the monitor itself (the upright piece), but I wasn't going to use the stand anyway, so that was no more than an oddity
- It's nice to see that it supports PIP
The picture quality is good, it is actually very similar to the 1080p that it is replacing (which was also an Acer, so I guess there's no surprise there). I can just get a lot more on the screen now, which was the goal, so I'm happy about that. It doesn't look amazing like the 27" iMac on my desk at work, so don't expect to be blown away by the picture quality.
