I was very excited to receive this monitor- but that excitement was quickly squashed when I immediately noticed a horrendous amount of back light bleed coming from the bottom right of the monitor. Now, I realize that a small amount of bleed or ISP glow is totally normal, but this glow had a terrible yellow hue that distorted any darker images. In addition, it radiated outwards covering almost the entire bottom right quarter of the screen. I immediately requested a replacement from Amazon, which Amazon was extremely courteous about, and they even shipped it to me one-day shipping.

The replacement: The back light bleed was still apparent, but not nearly as bad. In fact, I would have happily lived with it but for the overtly apparent difference between these two displays out of the box. Next to each other, the second display has significantly lower color temperature, and the whites are not nearly as white. To be sure that this was not me being paranoid, I ran a slew of calibration tests using the same calibration tools and software on both monitors. The results repulsed me. In simplest terms, the replacement monitor is roughly 25% less accurate in it's ability to produce accurate whites and grays. It's gray level drop off makes it even worse.

It should be noted that the calibration tools/software showed the first monitor within Acer's advertised specifications in regard to the tests I ran... the replacement is very much not.

It is a travesty that a monitor with such great potential has been put though such low standards of QA as this. Monitors should not be shipping when they suffer from serious product defects and/or are not capable of matching their advertised specifications.

Right now 2560x1440p (aka "2k") monitors are in the sweet spot right now if you are looking to upgrade from a 1080p monitor. Graphics cards are powerful enough to support 2k monitors but still struggle with 4k (i.e. trying to achieve 60+ FPS on current games). Also at the time of this review, you can get a 2k monitor 144/165Hz monitor where as that is not possible with 4k at this time. Some are ok without high refresh rates but I appreciate the advancement in technology for refresh rates. Speaking of the features it is exactly what I was looking for when shopping for a new monitor:

- IPS (of the 3 panel types, IPS provides the best picture and color reproduction)
- I wanted 2K/4K RES (didn't want to stay with 1080p)
- NVIDIA GSYNC (prevents screen tearing with no input lag)
- 144Hz REFRESH (helps reduce/eliminate ghosting) - OC to 165Hz
- 4ms RESPONSE (good latency is always better for gaming)

The previous model (XB270HU) was named the king of gaming monitors by TFT Central. If you want a very detailed review, visit TFT Central. They have not reviewed this model but this model improved upon XB270HU's success. Outside of the overclocking feature of this model, the features are pretty much the same. I don't think the XB270HU has an HDMI port like the 271 does, but you are going to want to use the Display Port anyway because you need the Display Port for both Gsync and to get 144/165Hz refresh rate.

For those who don't do much research on monitors, IPS monitor panels currently offer the best picture quality and color reproduction. These are the panels that video and photo editors use for their job. Which also make them great for movie and game immersion.

Coming from a Dell Ultrasharp 27". World of difference. Refresh aside, I was surprised by how much more detailed games look. Games like Witcher 3 and Shadow of Mordor, the grain of wood, the texture of rocks, EVERYTHING just seems to pop. I was expecting the jump in frames, not how vibrant and detailed everything would become. No dead pixels,no glare, just an all around PERFECT monitor.

Adding to this, the jump in frames really do help when playing FPS games. I never thought beyond 60fps would make a difference (half-life days). After a couple months I see a difference in my KD ratio and overall score. Out of my new pc build, this is the one component that has had the biggest impact on my overall enjoyment of pc gaming.

Hands down, this is the best display I have ever owned. Playing MGSV and Fallout 4 is blazing fast and beautiful. I can definitely tell the difference from 60 Hz to 144 Hz, and I haven't even tried overclocking to 165 Hz. Response time is also quick at 4 ms. The colors are phenomenal thanks to the IPS display. there is just no comparison after coming from my old Samsung 40". However, make sure to adjust the default settings, as it can be really bright at first. I have a 980ti so I can make use of the built in G-Sync and there is zero screen tearing, even with V-Sync off. G-Sync is supposed to have less input lag than V-Sync, so this is a plus. I guess a con would be you can't take advantage of this with AMD cards. The stand is really nice. It looks much better than in the picture. It also feels very sturdy. Be aware though, you can lower the screen really low so that it stands 15.8" above the desk, but the stand itself will stick out at about 16.8", barely clearing the roof of my desk at 17". I also like that it includes built in speakers; not great, as this monitor should be used with a good pair of headphones, but the speakers are useful when sharing the screen.

And then there's the imperfections, which are glaring considering the price tag. My display has a dead pixel just right of center. I know this is within "normal" limits, but it's really frustrating. Moreover, there is significant backlight bleed at the bottom right corner (see pic), which is apparently common with this model. The on screen display (OSD) is very clunky, but after a few mishaps, I got used to it. Weirdly enough, the power button gets stuck and it takes a few presses (sometimes 3) to register; turned off deep sleep and that seems to have helped.

TL;DR, I absolutely love this monitor, but I'm currently torn whether to keep it or return it. Again, the issues are minor but when you're paying this much for a 27", you expect the best build quality possible.
