Cons:
Input devices
"Sharp" edges
Design and Build Quality:
The build quality of this laptop is very high end. It is mostly brushed aluminum and resists fingerprints. Every part of the computer feels rigid and strong. It is tough to find any fault in the overall quality of the build.
My main problem with the computer is the design. The keyboard and touchpad are both well-built but I simply cannot get used to them. The keyboard is slightly too firm for my tastes, I feel like I have to press a little more aggressively than I am used to. I also do not enjoy the power button being a key, right above the number pad that I use often, and I do not enjoy having to hold the function button to change the brightness or sound levels. The touchpad also has a weird finish to it. It is smooth but it somehow feels a little too sticky. I sometimes find my fingers jumping around on the touchpad, especially in dry conditions.
I could live with those two things but what I cannot live with is the sharp edges of the laptops where the metal meets the plastic bottom. I tend to rest my wrists on the edges when using it on my lap and it feels like the computer is digging into my wrists. Even as I am typing this review, I feel the need to lift my arms up every so often to give them a break from the sharp edge. It is even more pronounced on the sides of the laptop. I feel like it could legitimately cut you if you rub against it the wrong way.
Performance:
There are two versions of this laptop around the same price. This version, AMD-based with the Ryzen 7 2700U/RX540, and the Intel/Nvidia version with the i5-8250U/MX150. Previous benchmarks I have seen put them on fairly equal ground and I have pretty much found that to be the case. Both versions will handle the everyday user's needs with ease, especially with a solid-state drive, with each one coming out ahead in certain aspects. I have used laptops with the i5-8250u before and I see no difference in the processor performance.
While the benchmarks show the RX540 to be pretty much equal to the MX150, I have not seen that to be the case. It might be more due to driver support, as the hardware specs of the RX540 should be faster than the MX150. I find I am just below the MX150 FPS in most of the games I have loaded up. It isn't a huge difference, no more than a handful of FPS for the most part, but it is something that should not be the case. Still, if you are looking at this laptop for slightly cheaper than the Intel/Nvidia model, or maybe you just prefer AMD, it isn't worth paying a little more for the MX150 in my opinion.
Battery Life, Misc:
The battery life on this is very good for having a dedicated graphics card. I average close to seven hours with normal web-browsing use. I have heard that the Intel/Nvidia model is better but given the same battery capacity, I doubt it could be by much. One of my favorite things about this laptop is how quiet it runs. Even when gaming/running benchmarks, the fans are barely audible. Under normal usage, you cannot even hear a fan with you hear on the bottom of the laptop. Thermals are also great. I have never felt the laptop get too hot for comfortable use on my lap, even when playing games. Acer did a great job with the thermals on this.
The display is above average, pretty high brightness with bright colors and crisp images, while the speakers are below average. The speakers are also below the laptop, on the front downward facing edge. Using the laptop on your lap will make the speakers, which are not that great to begin with, thoroughly mediocre.
Conclusion:
If you are looking for a portable, light gaming laptop then the Swift 3 is a great choice. Battery life is good, the laptop is thin and light, and you do not have to worry about fan noise or the computer getting too hot. You will definitely not have any performance issues whether you go with the AMD or Intel/Nvidia version. Performance will generally be about equal so opting for the AMD is not a bad choice when it is less expensive.
Pros:
- A little on the heavy side, but very slim. (Slim factor is a huge thing I was looking for and this passes for me!)
- Cooling vents seem to be on bottom of the laptop, but laptop has great cooling even while laying in bed with moderate use while the vents are covered on wool blankets! (Wow!)
- 3 USB ports (2 usb 3.0; 1 usb 2.0) are useful for extra peripherals.
- Backlit keyboard is perfectly bright in the dark
- Keyboard is laid out in a very sane and good way.
- Glossy IPS high-res display looks great.
- Laptop speakers are decently loud
- Webcam is actually fairly decent
- Screen bezel is not too much, and is small enough to be ignored
- Bluetooth module is good enough to connect to bluetooth speaker and play music/sounds with almost zero latency
- SSD is very fast and the 256 gb standard capacity isn't that bad.
Cons:
- Internal microphone is garbage.
- I am finding that the edges of the laptop are actually digging into my wrists while typing regularly
- I find that both my hands keep accidentally hitting the track pad while typing and accidentally scrolling, clicking, etc.
- Battery life is okay at no more than a few hours for me. I find that I am always plugged into an outlet and battery is only necessary when needing to unplug for a few minutes, or to only use the laptop for small periods of time.
- No ethernet or optical disk drive. Wifi module is fast enough to compromise for it slightly, but has some fallouts with gaming sometimes. Lack of ODD can be easily resolved with USB disk reader.
- While the build quality is superb, I find that it scratches a little easier and attracts little particles such as dust, hair, etc. Need to wipe often.
- Ram is non-upgradable due to not being soldered
This laptop is a great machine out of the box and would do well for light gamers, students, workers, etc. I am thoroughly enjoying this and hope this laptop lasts a long time! I have not tested the stock Windows software at all because I do not run Windows.
If you plan on keeping Windows on the machine, then the review has ended for you. If you intend to hear about the technical side of installing another OS on it, continue.
Now I got this laptop to run only Arch Linux. I do not use Windows 10 that it came with. The Arch Linux installation ran very smoothly, and I only started encountering issues when Xorg was installed. The laptop would randomly crash after 4 mins after startx. I found that enabling AMD debug mode by adding AMD_DEBUG="nodma,nongg" to /etc/environment helped. Also adding these kernel parameters to my kernel boot seemed to really solve crashing issues: "processor.max_cstate=1 intel_idle.max_cstate=0". Even though this is an AMD CPU, that intel_idle.max_cstate kernel param seemed to help substantially.
All hardware seems to work great except for the fingerprint scanner. THE FINGERPRINT SCANNER DOES NOT WORK IN LINUX BECAUSE OF A LACK OF DRIVERS FOR THE SPECIFIC MODEL FOUND ON THE SYSTEM (EgisTec Touch Fingerprint Sensor). Running startx with the env variable DRI_PRIME=1 forces X to run on the AMD GPU which is very helpful. I also start all games with that same env variable.
After fixing all the crashing and such dealing with Arch Linux, KDE, and AMD drivers, the laptop runs very smoothly and perfectly on Linux. Overall, this laptop is a great purchase and a great Linux machine for a serious Linux user!

1) Gorgeous and Expensive Corning Gorilla Screen - it's so beautiful but it hurts my eyes with reflection - I wish I'm not so wimpy. For the price the screen is tremendous value but .....
2) Coil Whine - It's obvious and gives me instant headache. But some people don't even hear it.....so. Maybe the one you receive does not have coil whine at all. It's pure luck that's what I heard.
3) HDMI port is 1.4 NOT 2.0. I called Acer to have this confirmed. From my experience, if a seller does NOT list the kind of HDMI on a certain model, I'm sure it's only HDMI 1.4. Even expensive models nowadays still give people HDMI 1.4a or 1.4b. The difference is that when you connect the laptop to an external 4K monitor, you can see that HDMI 1.4a or 1.4b only supports up to 30Hz, while HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 supports at least 4K@60Hz. If you are doing video editing or even just light gaming, you can feel the eye strain between a 4K@30Hz and a 4K@60Hz. Although this laptop has a decent discreet graphics card (Radeon 540), I do not get to enjoy the good graphics on an external monitor due to the bottle neck of a HDMI 1.4 port.
But if you only use the machine without external monitors, or use it only with low spec external monitors, and do not care about glare from the screen or coil whine from the machine, this is definitely a terrific value with good looks.

Hasta ahora el rendimiento es muy aceptable, prende en 8 a 10 segundos y todo lo carga bastante rápido.
Pantalla de super calidad. Y teclado suave.
