I read the favorable reviews for the Acer V223, and placed my order on Dec 17. I selected "Free Super Saver Shipping", and settled back to wait until sometime after Christmas, probably not until after New Years. The big box with the Amazon logo on the side arrived on Dec 19, roughly 48 hours after placing my order! Truly outstanding service, in my opinion.
I opened the shipping carton and found the factory box inside, padded and cushioned to protect from damage. Inside the factory box was the monitor inself, wrapped and padded, plus VGA and DVI cables, a manual on CD, and a printed manual.
I set up the monitor on my desk, connected the cables, and turned on the computer. Everything came up and worked perfectly, all I had to do was to reset my screen resolution from what I had been using on my old monitor.
I haven't seen a single dead pixel. The V223 runs a maximum resolution of 1680 x 1050 (which I use), and is very crisp at that setting. I've not even touched the color adjustments, as they are beautiful as delivered.
The monitor itself is a study in minimalist design, a simple black rectangle around the screen, with rectangular buttons for power and adjustments in the lower right corner. No chrome or shiney metal trim. Even the logo in the top right corner is subdued in a charcoal grey color.
The sturdy black stand which supports the screen also has a rectangular foot, unifying the overall design.
Everything about the V223, including how it looks, feels and operates, gives the impression of a high quality product.
The printed manual is not that great, only a couple of pages in each language. The manual on CD is better, but still not a lot.
In all fairness, however, I must say that I didn't find any need to refer to the manual.
Two great things about this monitor, which also apply to most other LCD's is that it can be placed at the back edge of your desk, providing a better distance at which your eyes can focus. LCD monitors also flicker much less than CRT monitors. Both of these qualities serve to reduce eyestrain, and make long sessions at the computer less fatiguing.
Internet browsing and email benefit from the wide screen format, as there is room for multiple windows to be open, side by side if desired.
Playing Second Life, the V223 has a lot of "video real estate" providing room for chat windows, maps and inventories, without crowding the view of where you are and what your avatar is doing.
I also run another computer with the BeOS operating system on this monitor, and it also works and looks great.
In sum, I'm quite pleased with the Acer V223, it is attractive and exceeds my expectations thus far.
I was very pleased with the image quality, it's sharp, plenty bright, and very even over the entire screen. The reasonably sized bezel is a plus as the monitor isn't any bigger than it needs to be which is good in a work environment.
Like all LCD monitors, it looks best at the native resolution and progressively less so at various lesser resolutions. I was able to find a compromise resolution (1280 x 768) for the employee that still looked very good and had acceptable text size for data entry and accounting needs. This is the one aspect of LCD monitors that can be a problem depending on your eyesight and application. I find many people don't really want the highest resolution for their application or eyesight capability.
Overall I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this monitor and at the $167 price it's very hard to beat in the 22" size range.
The first two are used for my desktop system as side-by-side monitors, giving me 42" of monitor viewing area. I am a photographer and use my system extensively for post production work using Photoshop, Illustrator, and other graphics software. These monitors are clear, crisp and display colors reasonably accurate. What I see displayed on the screens is pretty close to what I get from my HP 7960 color printer and what I get back from the photo labs that do my additional printing. The only drawback to these monitors is that they are bright. This took a short time to get use to and do not present any real problems when I keep a low light lamp illuminating my work room. I keep the settings at the default level and both monitors were almost identical in quality and light output.
As for my 3rd Acer V223, it is virtually idential in all respects with the first two monitors. This monitor is set up with a separate computer that I use as a network server. In order to reduce the power/ram drain my desktop system I use the server to power all my peripherals such as printers, scanners and Wacom tablet. The original monitor for this server was a CRT unit that was old and ran hot so I purchased this monitor as a replacement. It takes up less room and runs much cooler than the CRT thus reducing the heat in my work room.
The problem with the third monitor was that it arrived DOA. I had set the monitor up that day(Friday)in the evening so I had to email Amazon.com late in the day. The Customer Service was excellent. After I sent an email notice of the DOA monitor I received a reply email within 1/2 hour. I was provided a telephone number to call for a RMA. When I called the number the representative was polite and advise me that a replacement would be sent out on Monday (since it was the weekend)and it would take three days to arrive. When I explained that I needed the monitor for my business and I needed it ASAP. After two emails, back and forth, I was advised that it would be shipped on Monday as Express One Day shipping. The moniotor arrived as promised and the replacement was installed and worked fine. A return postage label was included in the replacement shipment so returning the item was simple and free. I am very impressed with Amazon.com's customer service.
