- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2010I got this netbook at Walmart for $228 two weeks ago but wound up returning it due to its poor Wi-Fi performance (both speeds and reception). I tried all sorts of things to get the Wi-Fi on this little guy to work as well as the Wi-Fi on my Dell Vostro 1500 but finally gave up and returned it this past Saturday.
I did the following to no avail:
- Upgraded my router's (Netgear WNR834B v2) DD-WRT firmware to the latest version
- Reverted my router back to the stock Netgear firmware
- Updated the wireless card driver
- Went into Device Manager and set the "Power Save Mode" setting to "Off" in the Advanced tab of the wireless card properties (this setting appears only on the Windows XP driver or the Windows 7 driver with a hacked INF file).
- Tried the Windows XP driver with a hacked INF file and set my router to "BG Mixed" (disabled Wireless-N entirely). This helped somewhat but still had trouble getting the full speed from my 7000/512 RoadRunner connection
- Tried changing various settings (channel, etc.) for the wireless on my router
I was never able to get anywhere near what would be considered good real world Wireless-N throughput, even with all my Wireless-G devices shut off and not connected. I was able to get the full speed from my RoadRunner connection a few times, but I was pretty close to the router.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2010Less than 2 months into ownership, the charge port became loose internally. eMachines wanted to charge me $199 to fix it. They refused to acknowledge this as a problem and put the burden on me to prove it was not damaged by me (last time I checked, you cannot prove a negative). I'm not sure how you can internally loosen a charge port. eMachines actually said "it was fine when we shipped it." The customer support robot is useless, good luck trying to speak to a human. The last piece of crap I will ever buy from eMachines is about to get a sledgehammer taken to it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2010I was looking for something compact and portable, but still capable of running my programs efficiently, without breaking the bank. I found it here. It's a fantastic little computer, and you absolutely cannot beat the price. I used to be apprehensive about Acers, but since I heard about the recent buyout and such, I decided I'd give them another go. The only draw back is Windows Starter 7. It seems to be designed with making people upgrade to a higher version in mind. Several features are disabled, even down to simple things such as changing your theme, your desktop wallpaper, and customizing your sound. That said, despite disabled features, it's still a relatively nice set up, and easily accessible.
My only qualm about the laptop itself is that the right button on the touchpad is a bit difficult to press. I'm finding myself hitting the middle of the touchpad to select things rather than the actual button.
Other than that, though, it's a great little laptop, and you can't beat the price.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2011Great usage, and still trouble free after 9 months. I added more RAM to make it a little better, but other than that, it's just fine.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2009I bought this sight unseen at Wal-Mart yesterday. They had apparently received them for a day after Christmas sale but never put them on display. I saw a bunch of them sitting in the "laptop cage" with a price tag of $228 on it. I went ahead and bought it, figuring that if I didn't like it I could take it back.
Well, I love it and I am so glad that I did get it. It's a great little netbook and I am already getting used to the keyboard. My only complaint is with the trackpad - I wish it was slightly larger. It seems to me like it could be a little wider and not affect the overall size of the case.
The screen is bright, keyboard good, I've been happy with the performance of it so far...overall I would rate this as one of my best purchases of 2009. I might even go back and try to get one for my wife. Even though I paid less than what this is selling for on Amazon, I would not hesitate to pay up to $300 for this netbook.
