The book is divided into color-coded sections (the following all caps). Just a sample of themes: PHONICS at the beach, SPELLING/VOCABULARY on the highway, GRAMMAR/ MECHANICS while shooting hoops, READING the process of growing sprouts, WRITING about a fun day, NUMBER/ OPERATIONS at doggy day school, ADDITION/ SUBTRACTION under the big top with a pair of juggling clowns...
There's MULTIPLICATION with a times table machine, MEASUREMENT/ DATA converting ingredients for chocolate flan, GEOMETRY at the robot body shop, NATURE of SCIENCE with a fossil, LIFE SCIENCE with a variety of animals, EARTH SCIENCE in space, PHYSICAL SCIENCE with drums, COMMUNITY maps and saving/spending in the MARKETPLACE...
...And the list goes on and on for over 280 activities.
The page of stickers in the back are currently the same ones found in all three grades of Achieve! workbooks. Each book includes a paper ruler and a separate code for a free two month trial of Go Math! Academy.
This book has a few editing choices that may help you decide if this is a good book for your family. This is a review and practice book with no time spent on teaching these topics. It's designed to be a book for one kid. The pages are not removable and there is no space for them to write their name on individual pages. The book does have an option to register your workbook download the book in PDF format which is a 100% copy in terms of content and resolution of images/font etc, it's an amazing feature! The content is Common Core based. This book is also 300 pages and 16 topics which means that no one topics gets enough coverage to do a page a day for a year and keep up as reinforcement. Even as a refresher if you do 3-4 pages a day over the summer you can knock it out, but the first Addition and Subtraction page is 6+2 level and at the end 25 pages later it's 796-468 so the ordering and pacing will take some parent review to make it work. And yes, there is an answer key!
Overall I think this is a solid work book that does a good job of sampling a ton of content in an way that is interesting to kids and will keep them engaged. The PDF is also an amazing feature worth the cost by itself!
This workbook is perfect for a supplement, but you won't want it as the only means of learning(as far as workbooks go). It covers a large variety of subjects, which is awesome, but that means that the amount of pages for each subject is limited. There are 13 subjects covered, and each one gets about 25 pages(front and back is included in that number....12 pages, front and back, and 1 back only) It would be perfect for weekends, after school review, summer work, or even a homeschooling supplement.
The subjects covered are:
Phonics, Spelling and Vocabulary, Grammar and Mechanics, Reading, Writing, Number and Operations, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication, Measurement and Data, Geometry, Life, Earth, and Physical Science, Community, and Marketplace
My favorite part of the workbook is the fact that there are so many "real" pictures/photos. My children are seeing what animals and people and things really look like, as opposed to illustrations of things. I just feel like they're learning better by looking at photos, like in this book, though based on our home library, I obviously have nothing against illustrated things. ;)
There is a huge variety of activities within the pages. All of the pages are bright and colorful. The activities are all on the quicker side, and not super time consuming to do.
I think it's pretty great, as far as workbooks go!
While this format is good for concentrating in certain areas, if you want to expose your child to all subjects, you'll have to come up with your own plan to mix it up each day as to which pages to do. Another drawback is that the pages in this book aren't perforated and can't be torn out.
On the up side, the book is very colorful, and the answer key is very well done. I don't have any issues with the content or quality, but it comes down to personal goals you have for your child and your ability to direct their learning. It will be tougher to get overall coverage with this book without burning out a subject, but if you want to concentrate on a few areas and then maybe do the others, this may be a better choice than a book that is arranged in a time based format but mixes up the subjects within each day's workbook pages.
