When my husband first assembled it and we put it on our ASUS 1005hab it went in fine, until I tried to restart it or safely remove or any other time I had to use it, I had a pattern set up. Not an ideal pattern. Every time I wanted to use it after the initial installation I had to go to Device Manager and uninstall it, and reinstall it to get it to show up in My Computer, and thus be able to use it. I tried every combination I could find to try and make it work but no matter I still had to uninstall and reinstall. Then I decided I would read all 63 reviews here and found something to try. This was to reset the jumpers on my PATA drive to Cable Select. The manual is very specific that "The hard drive you install in the Enclosure must be configured as a master", well in my case and a couple of others it just doesn't work for us on Master. I went to the Suggest A Fix forum and posted, but as I posted in my last post below, my problem was resolved here on Amazon:

"Problem Solved,

We took out that loose SATA cable which probably had nothing to do with it, and we also changed the jumper to Cable Select. Booted up, waited until it was totally up, turned on the USB drive, and it came up like plugging in a flash drive where it asks me what I want to do with the files. The safely remove icon was in the tray, and it showed up under My Computer. I disconnected it with the safely remove option, waited, turned it back on and it came up like above. I restarted the machine leaving the drive on and it came up normally once again.

Last night I did read all 63 reviews on Amazon and one mentioned about the Cable Select jumper setting, that was what made me read them all and it was in the last one where someone was specific about using Cable Select. Although the manual says for a PATA drive "The hard disk you install in the enclosure must be configured as a master". So much for the manual."

Thanks to all for helping solve my problem so I can enjoy my new drive enclosure.

It Works

I bought this for an old hard IDE (Pata) drive that I removed from another computer to use as a back up. It did not work when I first put it together.
I was following the CD and it was looking for a driver (You don't drivers for this). Use the directions from the Installation Guide and forget the CD, its useless. When I tried to install the drivers, it was for Windows 98.
This enclosure is a very, very tight fit. I removed the sata plug to get it out of the way since I don't need it right now.
It is a balancing act to line everything up. Make sure you have the plugs in all the way.
The 2nd time I put it back together, I left the cover off and just plugged in the power and usb to make sure it worked before putting it back together.

A Safe Hard Drive

I was distraught. A virus had contaminated my computer. I called tech support and the guy told I could save my Information with a hard drive enclosure I needed a sata enclosure that I could transfer my info too. I ordered this Item and was struck by it's beauty and graceful strength. I needed a small phillps screw driver to open and shut the enclousure. But once that was done I plugged it into my computer and I was able to tranfer my precious files. I rebooted my windows and re-intalled my files. Perfect. Now I also have an old computer with files and pictures I didn't want to throw away. With this item I saved the hardrive and threw the rest away. Thanks Amazon and AcomData for providing this fine product.

Buy Before You Have an Emergency

After several years of marriage I managed to convince my wife the need to buy random supplies from the hardware store I didn't immediately need: "I'm going to buy these wood screws." "Why?" she'd want to know. "Because I might need them someday."

The point is that if you're fixing something at home you don't want to waste an hour running out to buy screws that cost fifty cents. (Some of you will understand this: you're fixing something at the house, you run out for the tool or hardware you need, you get home and find you need something else, you run out again, and it just keeps repeating until you've wasted the day driving for a project that should've taken you only an hour.)

So how does this relate the AcomData Samba? It is the same principle. You buy this before you're hard disk or computer goes out. Here's a story about the first AcomData hard drive enclosure I bought, which was just for IDE: My daughter had an important homework assignment due and her computer broke the night before. This would've been a disaster for her except I used the Samba to pull her assignment off the hard drive.

I bought this SATA one because that is now the type of hard drives I now have in my computer and I wanted this on-hand in case the computer broke down. Hard drives are easy to get into this enclosure (even if some people complain it is a tight fit, I don't find it unreasonably so.) The cables that come with it are long, and it is easy and quick to convert an internal hard drive into an external drive. I highly recommend this product.

Just what I was looking for!

I have had one of these in use for 10 years or more (not exactly sure when I purchased it) and have had zero problems. Changing the hard disk is a snap, be it IDE or SATA -- adapters are easily accessible. I use this external enclosure for both Windows and Linux operating system. Have never had to worry about drivers though a drivers disk is provided for those who require one. While running, sound is hardly noticeable and casing is slightly warm to touch but never hot.

So glad these enclosures are still available. I am very happy I was able to find another one of these. It arrived nicely and securely packed. Packaging was easy to open and I had my new enclosure up and operational in no time. Very, very please with the construction and quality of this item. Would definitely grab another should future needs dictate such.
