This is a surge protector with six electric plug sockets that attaches to a standard outlet on the wall. Each side has a rotating column of three sockets that can be rotated 90 degrees from the front to side. In the center there are two LED's that tell you whether the unit is on and whether it's grounded. I also like the color. Most computers and consumer electronics tend to be some sort of black so if you use it in the study (as we do) it blends in quite well with the other electronics in the room. The plugs oriented to the side are also a plus because we have two computers on either side of the one outlet and when we plug them into the protector the room looks a lot tidier.

So on the whole, I quite like this surge protector. However, it does have some limitations. To start, it uses up both outlets not one as you might expect. There is a plastic post in the back of the unit that sits in the top outlet's ground hole to help anchor the surge protector. So you end up with one less socket than you might have expected. On the other hand, this feature helps lock the unit to the wall. Still, it's something to be aware of.

The other limitation has to do with networking. It's not that common yet but I have a Belkin network hub that goes through the household power wiring to connect the living room media hub to the computers in the study. It requires a wall outlet to send data through and, as I mentioned above, the surge protector uses both of them. This means that when the network is plugged into the surge protector rather than into the wall, the surge protector prevents the data flowing past and I can't access my devices in the living room. For 90% of people reading this review, this probably isn't a problem, but for the few that have adopted this new technology and have few outlets in an older house, it would be problematic and is the reason I am giving this otherwise quite good surge protector four stars rather than five.

I love the improved designs of surge protectors. I've replaced most of my old ones with more efficient designs, all of them intended to accept more plugs (safely) while taking up less space or at least offering multiple plug in options while decreasing the possibility of tangling. The swivel bars (3 plugs each side for a total of six) allows this one to go flush against the wall with cords aimed in different directions. Nice for plugging in electronics or electric items from opposite locations (to the right, to the left). The down side is that this does NOT actually fit flush against the wall: it wobbles. More important though, it has a peg to hold it to the wall but the peg doesn't do its job: adding a hole for a long screw would probably fix this problem. The wobble does not feel unsafe for me as my products are plugged in 24/7 so I am not needing to add or remove cords all of the time. Plus I have it behind a chair. However, I'm going to give it only 3 stars because it could come off the wall easily if a cord was tripped over or a child simply pulled it out - - exposing herself to a bare outlet.

If the idea is defense against an act of nature such as a lightning strike on your house or catastrophic failure of the transformer previously hanging over the roof of your car and now comfortably ensconced in the passenger seat after transmission of a 14,400 volt shot to your incoming lines make sure you read carefully the connected equipment warranty, keep receipts for all connected equipment in a secure location and under no circumstances plug in more than $200,000 of electronics and the Tesla into the protector...or when the storm clouds gather turn off your equipment and remove this device from the NEMA 5-15R duplex receptacle because neither this unit nor in all likelihood a whole house arrestor will save what's left of your possessions from a sad and tearful journey to the recycle collection site, in the other car. However, from another point of view, if I had and then entrusted $200,000 worth of electronics to a surge protector in this price range, I deserve to have it incinerated.

Alternatively, if you have ever watched the dials on your electric meter when the refrigerator, freezer or a/c unit kicks into high gear, those customary operational actions are more likely to result in spikes that fry men's (and women's) motherboards. This 6 outlet (3 per side) 90 degree swivel unit, which as far as I am concerned is a net loss of six since it consumes two receptacle plugs (yeah, I know I had too many devices on the circuit anyway with the two six outlet surge protectors I was running off it before...and will again after this one is moved to a less demanding location) can offer a limited degree of security at a somewhat modest price point.

This thing is little, but effective. It isn't like one of those large, bulky surge protectors, that takes up a ton of space. The flat design makes it easy to fit behind furniture, and you can swivel the plug strips 90 degrees to the side, making it really convenient to plug items in, because they aren't jammed against your furniture items. They run parallel, which makes it convenient for odd shaped plugs that need horizontal space. I plugged this in my bedroom wall, in an area I walk by frequently, and was pleased with how I could swivel the cords to the side, making it easier not to bump into them and accidentally unplug them.

A word of caution, if you have an outlet that isn't standard, this may not work for you. There is a third, plastic prong that plugs into the top outlet, so if your outlet isn't standard, it won't line up, therefore rendering it useless. I read through the leaflet that came with this, and it doesn't say anything about breaking off the plastic prong. However, if you do this, the surge protector won't stay securely in place. It doesn't fit totally snug in the standard outlet I plugged it into with the plastic prong lined correctly up and in. I have some outlets that have those breaker switch things on them and if you bump them, it shuts the outlet off and you have to press the button to reset it. This surge protector does not fit into those outlets.

I haven't had it long enough to know if it protects against an actual surge. Personally, I hope I never have to find out, but it makes me feel a little safer knowing that I have one to plug my electronic devices into. Earlier this year we had a crazy lightening storm, and even though I didn't lose power, a strike blew out my DVR.
