Editorial Reviews

Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing includes digital download. 2014 release, a 10-song virtual "greatest hits" set of acoustic renditions of songs from across the BOH catalog, recorded at Nashville's legendary Ryman Auditorium over two magical nights in April 2013. Having captured this two-night stand's worth of singular performances that the Nashville Scene said "brought to mind the best efforts of Eagles and Crosby, Stills and Nash," Band of Horses set about translating the energy and electricity of The Ryman document into the closest possible experience to having been there. Using the latest hardware from DSD recorder manufacturers Mytek, Band of Horses mixed the record in the band's hometown haunt of Charleston Sound. As a result, Band of Horses: Acoustic at the Ryman is one of a mere handful of non-Classical/Jazz albums mixed and mastered in the DSD format, capturing the ragged magic of an unforgettable performance in dangerously pristine quality.

I agree with the previous review: this is an album for fans of Band of Horses. The track selection is great to me. However this is because I already know the songs well and have a connection to most of them. It is indeed ACOUSTIC as the name implies. It is very intimate and every nuance is quite audible as the vinyl was cut from DSD master. I will invest time in this album over and over again. If you are a newcomer to Band of Horses, I invite you to follow their progression chronologically (Everything All the Time; Cease to Begin; Infinite Arms; Mirage Rock; and THEN Acoustic at the Ryman). Having said that, do it all RIGHT NOW! You are missing out a lot! Step 1: Quit your job or school. Step 2:Gather currency Step 3: Buy or download all of it, then play it all. Right now. Step 4: Thank me later.

I'm not a fan of most music with a twang (country or otherwise) but every few years, I back into something special. A few years back it was Drive By Truckers. And, a few weeks before Ryman was released, it was Band of Horses. What I heard was so good I pre-ordered it, got it on release day and then bragged on it. Funny thing is that I can't put my finger on why I like it. I just keep listening to it.

Acoustic at the Ryman serves as an excellent look back at Band of Horses over the last eight years. In that time they've released four great albums. This live set could be released as a greatest hits album, but instead it serves as a magnificent reintroduction to songs fans all know and love.

The acoustic version of "Wicked Gil" and "Funeral" are worth purchasing the album along. Fans of Band of Horses will love this record. It's a testament of the band's skill and songwriting ability. Outstanding work all around.

I usually don't like live albums because the sound isn't great, and for a lot of bands, the vocals are weak or buried. Not so here. Lots of nice harmonies and understated instrumentation. Excellent vocals as well. It's a real test of a band if they can pull off the acoustic thing and these guys do that. One of the best acoustic live albums I've heard in a while. Recommended!

"No one's ever going to love you" is worth the price and alone and this version literally brought me to tears. Anyone who knows how it feels, will really feel after listening to that.

Love this CD! Its soft and easy-listening. Something light to put on for your morning commute drive when youre still waking up, or in the background at home when youre chilling out, or even when youre in any kind of mood and want something amazing to be inspired by and sing along to. Love it love it love it. Buy it. Support Band of Horses and see them in concert if you ever get the chance!

I usually adore live versions and when BOH released one of their own, I couldn't have been more excited. However, I'm really on the fence about this one. It sounds very slapped together and slow.
Listen to it before you buy it

I love BOH with a passion, but have found a few flaws in live shows, as I am a super critic at times, but this amazing live document is as I would have hoped and imagined they would be recalled during a live performance. The "Ryman" doesn't hurt the situation, being that it is one of the top places to preform live in, but all together, with the set list and mood - stunning.

Haven't loved a live record in a LONG time, this is on rotation on my record player weekly-!

Enjoy.
