Acoustics: Sound Fields and Transducers

This is an improvement on my 1954 copy of Beranek's Acoustics, and has much of the same important information (i.e. electrical and mechanical analogs of acoustic systems) presented (somewhat) more clearly, as well as some updated sections on loudspeakers and so forth.
If you, like me, were handed a disintegrating Acoustics Society paperback of acoustics and told to start working on acoustic design, then bought a (very reasonably priced) older hardback of Acoustics but found it to be not much of an improvement, spring for this shiny Modern Textbook version. It might help.
If you are looking for a recreational treatment of the science of sound, this would not be my first choice.

Please seek out the posted errata for this book. It can be found on the Mellow Acoustics site as a PDF. There is a full 20 pages of corrections.

Otherwise, this is a great reference book. It's nice to have the updates to the original Beranek text.

whether your interest is as a musician, an audiophile or as a studio engineer this book is a must read!

I'm not much good at math, but I learned a lot from this and enjoy the dry humor ( ex: "The Beranek Effect" )

Highly comprehensive and there have been changes made to my stereo system as a result of reading this; I often refer back to it

An excellent update to the 1954 classic. It is particularly strong in equivalent circuit electro-mechanical modelling and worked example problems. Most of the emphasis is on the acoustics of loudspeakers with clear illustrations.

A someone studying acoustics on his own with only a musical and mathematical background, this book has been invaluable. The only reason I'm going to give it 4 stars is because I'm almost positive there are a slew of misprints in the book; things like references to tables and figures that don't exist (or may just be numbered wrong), blatantly wrong units, variables that are introduced but aren't defined until two sections later. Most of the errors are pretty easy to figure out due to context, but those are only the ones I caught; having so many small errors reduces my faith that this book is free of larger errors.

Nonetheless, this book is outstandingly useful and a must-have for anyone interested in the topics outlined.

This is the book to get to learn about acoustics from one of its original founders of the science and engineering in the field. I prefer it to the later book jointly authored with Mellow but that is OK if you can't get this earlier edition. Beranek is a good teacher and the ideas flow naturally, but succinctly. Equations are used only to inform, not intimidate.
