How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

1.0 out of 5 stars sublime and ridiculous

This book was fascinating in that it straddles real science an "new agey naturopathic medicine" It claims to follow real science and does so at times. But at times it sounds like a typical naturopathic lecture on cleansing and detox: "When this happens look for this and don't forget that. In this case do this but you might want to think about that... with no real scientific back up for what is recommended and being said.
The information on omega 3's is flat out wrong and what is typically propogated "You need balanced 4 to 1 ratios of Omega 6 to 3. yes you do in an ideal world where you are perfectly healthy. In the real world that is far unbalanced to Omega 6 this consumption ratio will only hurt you. What they should say is "Shoot for at least 4 to 1 6 to 3 ratios and test to see if you are close... adjusting the dose as needed to achieve at least that level.
As far as ORAC- that is somewhat useful if you are dealing with poly phenols. Fish oil is one of the most anti-inflammatory natural compounds out there in high doses and has an ORAC of ZERO.
The shameless recommendations of specific products in the book doesn't bother me and its refreshing to see them since many people would like guidance on exactly what to buy and use. I would feel better if the references regarding these products were not written by the people who make and sell them. Speaking of references they range from ancient and questionable to recent and valid. The immune nature of leaky gut was spot on with very recent findings. Much of what is written here is exactly what I have been teaching my own patients for several years so its hard not to like the book in general since it does add some additional credibility to the various topics.
In short this is a very strange book that seems not to know its own identity. It fluctuates between metaphysical new age doctrine and true hard core science. As such it will appeal to neither audience and probably won't sell well. That may have not been the intent of the authors but why write a book so few people want. As much as I enjoy this the book is also poorly written in the style I mentioned above- bouncing all over the place and hard to follow. I think a 3 is actually pretty generous for this book

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book but Poorly Translated

As a mitochondrial specialist I enjoyed this book immensely. It introduces many topics that are researched but have not yet hit the medical mainstream. As such, it has a lot to offer. However, I have to say that either this is a terrible translation or it was written by a person for whom English is a second language; it is full of errors in spelling, grammar and syntax. This makes it a difficult read for the native speaker, since you have to keep figuring out the author's intended meaning.

Since this book introduces concepts unfamiliar to most US clinicians, the poor writing can make the information itself seem unreliable. That is really a shame since many of the concepts are not only credible but likely pathways that could lead to improvements in care. Since mitochondropathy has so few treatments, I would hate to see medical readers blowing off this book just because it is poorly written/translated. I would recommend doing literature searches on any topic it mentions that you find intriguing... if nothing else this book is kind of like a compass that points towards interesting ideas and theories you might want to follow up on if you are a doctor, researcher or Mito patient.

A book that is extremely well written on this topic is Drug-Induced Mitochondrial Dysfunction, edited by Dykens and Will. It is not as wide ranging as the book I am reviewing, but much more concise.
