So much happens in this one and most of it falls into the land of spoilers so you really, REALLY need to read it to experience it all, but what can be said is that both Zoey and Ryker go through hell in this one, both physically and emotionally but their stubborn natures and the need to see each other, as well as protect those they love, again trumps everything else. Their determination to do whatever it takes to survive has them making tough decisions and relying on people that they don’t necessarily trust but know that they need in order to survive. Through all of this I felt like Zoey finally came into her. She still has her stubborn streak and is a little reckless, but there is now a maturity to her that wasn’t fully there before. She finally sees the big picture and her place in it all. Ryker, is still the stubborn Viking, but even he has moments of enlightenment that have him taking a step back and re-evaluating his views.
Then there are the rest of the crazy cast of characters that inhabit this world. Dr. Rapava is one sick f(u)(c)k. That is really the only way that I can truly describe him. His kind of crazy is off the charts. Amara still had me wondering just where she stood in the game with Vadik. Being a demon, Vadik has more leeway on the crazy than Rapava, but not by much. Croygen, I diidn’t know what to really think of the pirate before, but now I have to say that I kind of adore him. Then there is Sprig, who I seriously love and adore as he brings his own personal brand of sweet, yet crazy and snarky to the story.
This one was filled to the brim with emotional landmines and WTF moments that kept me turning the page to see what would happen next. And that ending?!? Talk about unexpected, but very well played as we prepare for the final installment of the series.
The Bottom Line: A great addition to the series and I can’t wait to see what Ms. Brown comes up with for the conclusion of the series!
Brown writes appealing, fast-paced content that keeps the reader engaged and even anxious to see what will come next. Some of the scenes are so painful everything cringes away but so riveting that you can't actually look away as you relish in the plot, details, and discovery of the characters. Content warning to readers trying to avoid explicit sex scenes, abuse, torture, or violence in the books they read, as this series does not shy from them. The content and several scenes in this book are very heavy and can even be seen as traumatic by some readers. Many hard topics are touched on and even discussed outright. Ethics, moral conduct, violence, torture, and mutilation of self and others to name a few. Though it has some heavy content, it still reads well, is riveting in its delivery and hard to put down. The story-line moves steadily and builds on the characters development and depth, shows real examples of inner-turmoil and the struggle of survival, hard decisions, and the price you can pay for caring.
Zoey is back at DMG. Vadik received a nice payment for returning her. She is now a test subject. They have been conducting tests on her while they kept her in a coma. Ryker is Vadik’s prisoner. Vadik wants the stone and Ryker refuses to tell him where it is. So Vadik turns his attention to Zoey. Ryker refuses to give in as Vadik tortures him.
Zoey is trapped in the facility. She has to play the game to get more freedom. Her goal is to take the whole DMG down. Her acting skills are honed as is her lying. She has to hide her disgust and anger at what Rapava does to fae. She also knows if Ryker could get to her, he would.
Unfortunately nothing is going Zoey’s way. She learns shocking news that alters her decisions and renews her resolve. She feels the pressure to save her loved ones from the torture and scientific testing.
It all changes when Ryker is able to escape and make his way to DMG. Zoey is forced to choose between two people she loves deeply.
This series is fabulous. I love Zoey as a character. She is tough and smart. She doesn’t back down. She is placed into a situation that forces her to do horrible things. Her guilt is overwhelming as is her hate for Dr. Rapava. She has to control all her emotions in order to save those she loves.
I felt just as frustrated as Zoey did when things were thrown in her way. The author made her work for everything. Ryker is tortured and then has to depend on Amara to escape. He also learns shocking secrets. I wasn’t expecting half of what happened. After a while I just held on as the ride rushed forward. It was a great story. Lots of suspense and torment. It kept the series moving in an exciting direction. The ending was crazy. I can’t wait to see what happens next. I give it a 4.5 out of 5.

This one was the worst one out of the 3,so disappointed. The characters are all over the place, still not lovely any of them, do I actually know them? no.
When you have this many characters in a novel and believe me there are a lot, they are just characters, it needs to be more in depth about them in the previous novels first.
More stupid, thick mistakes by both the main characters. Characters who were slightly introduced in one of the previous novels come into the story line more and your like who?
All the way through this, your like why is she doing this move? doesn't make sense.
So much reception in this one and way too much descriptive words in unimportant areas, yet the characters don't get this.
By novel 3 I expect to have a love/hate with the main characters , yet the main characters I feel neither but I am starting to like 3 others, which doesn't make sense to me.
Shame but I won't be downloading the other novels in this series.
Don't get me wrong, I still stand by that this author has written about certain things that I have not seen in any other novel, I applaud this, as it's rare. Just lacks so much for me, which is a shame.
However, I seem to be on my own in this thinking, so will check out one of her other series just in case these are one off mistakes.
There are some beautifully tender moments in this book, some crazy hot ones too, but there are also plenty that will break your heart. It's a huge cliffhanger ending so I can't even promise that you'll be all warm and fuzzy by the end, but I can promise that it will be worth it.
The author has an amazing ability to get you really involved with the characters, her world building is just enough (ie not too much but not so barren) and she is very good at building tension. I loved the character of Rykey but am definitely also on Team Croygen!
It's really hard to review this without revealing too much of the plot so I won't go into detail. The only issue I had with the book is that I was so impatient to get to the action and meaty parts that I was sometimes frustrated with the plots pace. It's not that the pace was slow, it's just that I really really really really really really want Ryker and Zoey to be together.
I feel like I have been on an emotional roller coaster and it's not about to end soon. I cannot wait to read book 4 and eagerly await its release.
I don't want to spoil the book in any way but I urge you all to read it. It is a fantastic read.
That ending is proper cliff-hanger too! How could it just end like that? But i have a feeling that book 4, Ryker will get his powers back and be able to save Zoey, so I'm off to start book 4, which thankfully I already have so i can jump straight in!
