Across the Ravaged Land Hardcover – September 24, 2013

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 239 ratings

Across the Ravaged Land is the third and final volume in Nick Brandt’s trilogy of books documenting the disappearing animals of eastern Africa. The book offers a darker vision of this world, still filled with a stunning beauty but now tragically tainted and fast disappearing at the hands of man.
In addition to a range of starkly powerful animal portraits, Brandt introduces some new themes, as humans make an appearance for the first time. He also contributes two essays summing up his photographic odyssey, which has taken more than a decade of intensive work to complete.

The themes in Nick Brandt’s photographic series always relate to the destructive impact that humankind is having on the natural world and humans themselves.

"The Day May Break" is a global series portraying people and animals that have been impacted by environmental degradation and destruction. The people in the photos have all been badly affected by climate change - some displaced by cyclones that destroyed their homes, others such as farmers displaced and impoverished by years-long severe droughts.

Photographed in the same frame as the people, the animals are almost all long-term rescues, victims of everything from the habitat destruction to wildlife trafficking.

The Day May Break: Chapter One, photographed in Kenya and Zimbabwe in 2020, was published in 2021. photographed in The Day May Break: Chapter Two, photographed in Bolivia in 2022, is published in 2023.

SINK / RISE (2024) is the third chapter of The Day May Break, and focuses on South Pacific Islanders impacted by rising oceans from climate change. The local people in these photos, photographed underwater in the ocean off the coast of the Fijian islands, are representatives of the many people whose homes, land and livelihoods will be lost in the coming decades as the water rises.

Everything is shot in-camera underwater.

"This Empty World" (2019) addresses the escalating destruction of the African natural world at the hands of humans, showing a world where there is no longer space for animals to survive. The people in the photos also often helplessly swept along by the relentless tide of ‘progress’.

"Inherit The Dust" (2016), records the impact of man in places where animals used to roam, but no longer do. In each location, Brandt erects a life size panel of a previously unreleased animal portrait photographs, setting the panels within a world of explosive urban development, factories, wasteland and quarries.

From 2001-2012, Brandt worked on a trilogy of photographic series, charting this disappearing world. The title of the three bodies of work form one consecutive sentence: "On This Earth, A Shadow Falls, Across The Ravaged Land."

Brandt has had solo gallery and museum shows around the world, including New York, London, Berlin, Stockholm, Paris and Los Angeles. Born and raised in England, he now lives in the southern Californian mountains.

He is co-founder of Big Life Foundation, a non-profit working to protect the animals of a 1.6 million acre area of Kenya and Tanzania.

This book is stunning and I love all the photos. A little disappointed because the end of the book cover is damaged. Hint the 4 stars....Overall, it's a great book but probably a hassle to send back! I'm going to keep it and I would recommend this book!

Nick Brandt has done good job documenting wild animals in Africa. There is a feeling of film as well as medium format he used in these projects, as well as color grading. The subjects them self are also gorgeously looking. Appreciate it.

Even without reading the forewords of Nick Brandt, this book is riveting and very often in a painful way. Some of the images are extremely strong and very hard to shake. Add his text and you have something that will scar your soul.
From a purely photographic viewpoint, his photos are downright amazing. They are not flashy in any way; all are black and white with a sepia tone with a very high resolution. His pictures spoke to me because I feel they exhibit the soul of the artist, they are real, very real.
Last, but not least, the print is sumptuous; all are very matt and are of the best quality I have ever seen.
In every aspect, this is an amazing book.

Stunningly haunting book and had been wanting this for some time. Bought it used and couldn't be in better shape. Nick Brandt's work is unsurpassed and as a wildlife photographer having travelled to Africa many times, this book stirs the soul and his outlook and belief in what is coming is more than disturbing. We must stop what is happening on this continent with the senseless and continued killing of it's wildlife. Brandt is in my opinion, one of the greatest photographers out there.

I received this much anticipated book today and it was all that I expected and more. Frankly, although less voluminous than Genesis by author Sebastiao Salgado, the imagery had a much more profound impact on me on an emotional level. There were no filler images, every image included was just the right amount to convey the emotion desired. My only complaint and it is a major fault for such a great book, was that arrived with corrugated and bent cover sheet. The folks who packaged before shipping did a lousy job of protecting the book on it's voyage.

This is a wonderful book in a wonderful series !! The photos are beyond incredible !! Please EVERYONE give your support to Big Life Org, they are doing Great work !!! Although, I wanted this book, I was excited to see it advertised to be autographed by the author. I was very disappointed to receive my purchase, open the cover, and see that it was autographed to "FRANK". Which is of course, the seller. It would have been nice to know this prior to purchase !!!

I love it and hate it at the same time. The photographs are truthful and heart-wrenching. Why do we, as humans and the dominant life form on this planet, have to destroy so much of it, and so many of our beautiful animals? And for what? Fake medicine. It makes my heart bleed.

Soddisfatto

5.0 out of 5 stars More beautiful and terrible images from Nick Brandt
Reviewed in Australia on March 28, 2021
As in his previous book On This Earth, A Shadow Falls, the images are arresting and unforgettable. All have a kind of beauty, though many are mournful. A physically large book filled with large images, printed in high quality. Outstanding.
