About the author

Ian Thomas Healy is a prolific writer who dabbles in many different speculative genres. He's a fifteen-time participant and winner of National Novel Writing Month. His popular superhero fiction series, the Just Cause Universe, is ever-expanding. He is also the creator of the Writing Better Action Through Cinematic Techniques workshop, which helps writers to improve their action scenes.
Ian also created the longest-running superhero webcomic done in LEGO, The Adventures of the S-Team, which ran from 2006-2012.
When not writing, which is rare, he enjoys watching hockey, reading comic books (and serious books, too), and living in the great state of Colorado, which he shares with his wife, children, house-pets, and approximately five million other people. - Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2014While Action is not a magic bullet as the reader actually has to take what is presented, think about it and apply it, the book is a good resource. It presents another way of looking at action scenes just as "Writing Fight Scenes" or "Fight" present different ways of looking at action scenes. I found the movie way of looking at an action scene useful as it can be applied to about any kind of weapon, hand to hand, brawl or battle scene. Writing action scenes is much easier if the author has some experience in the type of scene they are writing of course. But that said, there are lots of resources to help with getting that knowledge such as combat vets if you are their friend, weapons experts, martial arts experts and tons of youtube videos to watch.
Breaking down action into a scene, engagement, sequence provides a helpful approach to the action. The author provides some good exercises to help with these concepts if the reader actually does them. Pacing is the flow of the action during a scene. It is what gives life to the action. The description of Pacing was applied to different types of scenes. But the Pacing section could have had more illustrative content.
One consistent suggestion in this book was to analyze action scenes in your favorite movies. IMHO the Bourne Series has some great close combat scenes to analyze.
Overall I would recommend "Action" as a useful tool in the author tool box along with some other approaches to writing these types of scenes.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2013As a romance writer, I don't rely heavily on rock 'em sock 'em scenes. So, when I found myself in need of them, I turned here for a bit of instruction on the mechanics and flow. For me, my concern was in finding a way to adequately pace my action scenes while keeping things fresh. This book helped with that. Kudos to the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2018Forget about page counts because this book is pure gold. Healy walks you through how to set-up a great action scene and gives some great examples in the process. I refer to this book every time I have to write a fight scene, especially ones with hand-to-hand combat. I absolutely love this book. Highly recommend it to any author who wants to write better action or fight scenes.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2013This book gives you more choice of words to use than a regular thesaurus does, but it is not big enough; not comprehensive enough and I find I almost never use it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2012My editor recommended this book while in the middle of a heavy edit. I'd been having trouble with clarity in my action scenes, i.e. who is where and doing what etc. ACTION! helped me break down every action sequence into manageable parts and then put them back together into a very clear, fast-paced scene that will leave your readers breathless. Highly recommended for sci-fi/fantasy, action/adventure writers, and anyone who might have someone punching someone else during the course of the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2012From book blogger Margaret Yang writingslices.wordpress.com
I've read several of Ian Thomas Healy's novels, and the action scenes were my favorite parts. He writes such exciting scenes that I'm always left a little breathless, as if I've been fighting or driving or running along with the heroes. Yet, I'm never confused, no matter how much is happening on the page. I was eager to read ACTION, to find out how Healy does it. After studying the book, I feel closer to understanding how action scenes work, although I'm not sure Healy has given me all the tools to apply that knowledge to my own stories. Still, I have not found a better resource specifically focusing on action scenes. So, if you'd like to write stronger, clearer, more exciting trouble for your heroes (and who wouldn't?) this is the book for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2014Terrific help in plotting action. I had never thought about it, but action means VIOLENCE.
When put so baldly, it's easier to figure out how to include the right violence in the story and make it work.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2017This breaks things down as efficient as Steven Seagal with a dozen elbows. A quick read that strikes at the heart of the matter.

Found a lot of advise in this book very please with buy
JCReviewed in Canada on May 11, 20204.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
A fairly comprehensive look at how to build good action scenes in stories. Some of it might seem simple and obvious, but honestly, most of the advice that I've found helpful to getting good words onto paper is. If I didn't need to be told what the purpose of a chase scene is, fully deconstructed and examined, I wouldn't have bothered buying the book in the first place.
ValentinReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 5, 20144.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, just too short
This book is excellent.
No blah blah, just just good insight, a structure/method and some great examples.
In fact, my only two reproaches is that it is too short and that all the examples are fantasy based.
If the book had twice as many examples but in different genres such as science-fiction, action, the book would be perfect.
KS the DreamerReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 8, 20164.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read
It's not a bad book, there are some good points, and it is definitely worth a read.
