A Wi-Fi Solution 2X Faster than Traditional Repeaters

The PWR51WK01 Kit features a high-performance Powerline Network Adapter and Wireless Network Extender, designed to deliver exceptional network performance and reliability to wired- and wireless-connected devices throughout your entire home. The kit allows you to extend your networking in two ways: through the electrical wires already installed in your home, and through wireless networking. It's the ultimate network extender, and gives you added flexibility when connecting today's Internet-dependent devices, including notebooks, tablets, smartphones, and mobile gaming consoles.

Why is the Wireless Network Extender + Powerline Network Adapter Kit Better than Other Solutions?

There are some distinct advantages. Wireless repeaters connect to your router and your devices simultaneously, so 50% of your bandwidth is already used up as soon as you connect to the network. The PWR51WK01 Kit connects to your router through the electrical wires already in place in your home, doubling performance. Depending on where you place the Wireless Network Extender, you can get rid of wireless dead spots in your home, resulting in a strong and reliable wireless network that extends to your backyard, garage, or second-story bedrooms.

How Does it Work?

It's simple. The Powerline Network Adapter uses your home electrical lines to create a high-speed wired network throughout your home. Then, the Wireless Network Extender transmits the network signal from an electrical outlet, creating a wireless network

As soon as I plugged in the two components into either side of my NYC railroad apartment they started talking to each other. WiFi worked shortly thereafter with the default SSID and password.

But I wanted to change the SSID and password. The paper instructions told me to visit the website for details. Fortunately this is a repeater, not a router, so I had internet access. Kinda cheeky, though.

The online PDF instructions state to visit either http://myextender or 192.168.10.1. http://myextender never worked and my network is 192.168.1.x, so the 192.168.10.1 address is not accessible.

I reset the units to factory defaults and connected to them via ethernet. I received no DHCP IP address. I tried via WiFi. Still no IP. I manually set my computer's IP to 192.168.10.100. Still no joy with http://myextender, but 192.168.10.1 loaded up the GUI. I tweaked the settings (WPA2 only, WPS off, custom SSID, better password), plugged the devices back into my network, and things worked great.

So far the speed is exactly the same as connected straight to the router. The ping times to a nearby server come out a couple ms slower but we're talking 18ms vs. 20ms. The two devices are about 200 ft away from each other. The WiFi signal extends into my backyard nicely. Things have been stable.

So top marks for out-of-the-box simplicity if you don't need to change anything. Speed is fantastic. If you need to tweak the settings you should expect a bit of a process.

*Update*
I see that myextender now has been given the IP of 192.168.1.146, where the settings can now be tweaked from my network.

I've been plagued by a WiFi dead spot at my favorite location to work with my iPad -- in my sunroom, as far away from my home office router as you can get in my house, through lots of walls and plumbing pipes. I installed a repeater router, of the same make as my primary router, which receives the data packets wirelessly from my office router and resends them wirelessly. That works better than just trying to use the office router located at the farthest corner of my house from my favorite spot in my sunroom. However, the resend rate is only half the throughput of the office router -- which is unfortunately the way it goes with wireless repeaters. The way my house is configured, it seems to be the Bermuda Triangle for WiFi signals.

Because of occasional weak performance from my repeater setup (especially Facetime disconnects), I decided to try out a powerline WiFi extender (that seems to be the generic name for these gizmos), which uses the house wiring almost like an Ethernet cable. You plug an "adapter" unit into a wall outlet close to your primary router, then connect the adapter to the router via an Ethernet cable. At the dead spot in your house, you plug in the Extender unit, which is bigger by about 2X in size. It has the radio in it to wirelessly transmit the internet data packets it is receiving from the primary router via the house wiring.

After several generations of development and refinement of the technology, most of these "Kits" do very well, or so it seems from most of the reviews I've read.

Almost all the usual router manufacturers sell such kits, which provide the Adapter and the Extender, and usually an Ethernet cable.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The product itself gets 5 stars but I have to deduct two stars for the abysmal tech support.

What does this product do. Here is a blurb from the product description..."The Powerline Network Adapter uses your home electrical lines to create a high-speed wired network throughout your home. Then, the Wireless Network Extender transmits the network signal from an electrical outlet, creating a wireless network." That's right, it uses your home's electrical lines to create a network. It sounds too good to be true.

My home is very long and like many people I had problems getting my WiFi to reach all areas of my home. Set up was a breeze. You plug the adapter into an electrical outlet near your router and plug an Ethernet cable from your router (or in my case a hub) into the adapter. You wait a few minutes until you see green lights and then you plug the extender in an electrical outlet near where you want better WiFi coverage. You wait another couple of minutes for more green lights and you're in business. You look for the Actiontec-1925 network name and enter the password on the back of the extender and you're in business. The speed is great and the unit works great. But here's the problem.

I wanted to add the extender to my current WiFi network. In the quick start guide it recommends doing this so you don't have to remember two separate network names and passwords. It says to visit their website for detailed instructions. I went to the website and there we no detailed instructions. There were no instructions at all. I went to the URL listed in the quick start guide for the instructions and it defaulted to the main support page. I then tried using their online tech support. I explained my question and the tech said it couldn't be done.
