This is a really good summary of the research on charcoal by an expert in the field.
If you're seeking references... then this is the book.
Don't be fooled by how slim it is... it's filled with a LOT of relevant information and the writer is well informed.
The writing style is very readable and even a novice would be able to understand most of it.

Stuff even took the bitterness out of my chronically too-strong coffee/expresso. Add to coffee grains when brewing. Feeding a heaping teaspoon of activated charcoal turned my dog around Overnight! He'd been in a painful crisis for 36 hours, probably from eating some long-dead creature.
My human illnesses are more orthopaedic, i.e. breaks. But if I get a bug or other poisoning, I'll down it (charcoal) with confidence. Tried it for brushing teeth, but the black corners of the mouth put me off. It wasn't clear whether the teeth were whiter, because the black settled at the gumline, too.
